ISRAELI gymnasts will not compete at next week’s World Artistic Gymnastics Championships after hosts Indonesia denied them entry to the country.
Indonesia said it would not grant visas to the Israel team due to the country’s war in Gaza.
Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation and a staunch supporter of Palestinian independence.
That means defending world floor champion and two-time Olympic medallist Artem Dolgopyat won’t get the chance to defend his title in Jakarta on Sunday.
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) issued a statement saying only that it was “taking note” of Indonesia’s decision, without expressing any opposition.
On Tuesday the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected requests from the Israel Gymnastics Federation (IGF) for urgent action.
The IGF filed two appeals with CAS, seeking intervention to block the decision.
The first appeal requested that CAS annul FIG’s “taking note” statement.
The second, filed with the six Israeli athletes who were due to compete, requested that CAS force FIG to “take the necessary measures that guarantee Israeli participation or in the alternative, to move or to cancel the championships.”
In response, FIG argued that Indonesia’s decision to bar the Israeli team’s entry “falls entirely outside their competence.”
Dolgopyat was one of six gymnasts – alongside Eyal Indig, Ron Pyatov, Lihie Raz, Yali Shoshani and Roni Shamay – who submitted the requests.
Both IGF requests were denied, and while the second appeal “is still ongoing” it won’t be heard before the event this weekend.
The IGF said in July it had been assured its delegation would be welcome at the worlds.
But their planned participation sparked protests in Indonesia as the war in Gaza continued.
On Monday, 20 living Israeli hostages and hundreds of Palestinian detainees were reunited with their families as part of a ceasefire deal.
Indonesia was stripped of its right to host football’s Under-20 World Cup in 2023 after the governor of Bali, where the draw was due to take place, refused to host Israel.
Indonesia was banned from the 1964 Olympics after it refused entry visas for Israeli athletes for the 1962 Asian Games.
There were 86 countries, including Israel, slated to compete at the world championships, which end on October 25.
