NEWTON FALLS — The family of Brenda Hibbard, a Niles resident and retired Newton Falls elementary teacher who died this month after being hit by a pickup truck in a neighbor’s yard, has started a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses.
Hibbard, a breast cancer survivor, retired in 2023 after 30 years of teaching.
As of Monday, $9,781 had been raised in the GoFundMe account.
Reports had indicated that Hibbard, on the evening of Oct. 4, was outside in her driveway admiring the moon when the driver of a pickup truck went through a neighbor’s yard and hit a shed and a parked vehicle.
When Hibbard was taking photos to document the damage, she was struck by the truck, which then fled the scene.
She was found unconscious and taken to a hospital trauma center, where she died of her injuries.
At the Oct. 8 Newton Falls Board of Education meeting, Hibbard was remembered by school officials, administrators and more than 20 people who attended the meeting.
School Superintendent Andreas Johannson said Hibbard was “a beloved second-grade teacher” before retiring in 2023.
“Brenda touched and shaped the lives of thousands of children, fostering curiosity, confidence and a lifelong love of learning. Her kindness, dedication and lasting influence on the Newton Falls learning community will be forever remembered and cherished,” Johansson said.
Wayne Keeley, 63, of Warren Township, was arrested by Niles police and arraigned in Niles Municipal Court, facing charges of vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident.
