Bears Nightcap: More Fourth Quarter Magic Leads to Another Culture Win

Watching the Monday Night Football broadcast of the Bears vs. Commanders game, I couldn’t help but notice how the broadcast hyped Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels as the main event.

I’m not mad. Daniels and the Commanders went to the NFC title game in his rookie season. He’s been terrific. For all intents and purposes, he ended the Chicago Bears’ season last year when his Hail Mary fell into Noah Brown’s arms as time expired.

However, as Caleb Williams said earlier this week, this team is different.

Tonight, the decisive score came as the clock read zero in D.C., again. But tonight, Williams and the Bears had the last laugh.

Jake Moody, who was on the practice squad this morning, drilled a 38-yard field goal through the uprights to secure a 25-24 Chicago victory. Moody’s game-winner followed another clutch fourth-quarter drive that set Chicago up for a victory, something we’ve seen with regularity since he’s arrived.

    Caleb Williams Magic

Time seems to slow down when Caleb Williams has the ball with time ticking down and the game on the line.

“It’s our time,” Williams said after Chicago’s win over Las Vegas two weeks ago. “It’s time to go win the game. And there’s nothing else that matters. Nothing is more important than that (next) play, that drive, in that moment.”

It was Chicago’s time again tonight. More specifically, it was Caleb’s time to do what he does best—find a way.

Unlike Week 4 in Vegas or the other game-winning drives Williams has orchestrated, he wasn’t the show’s star tonight. Tonight, D’Andre Swift rushed for 29 yards on three carries to set up Moody’s game-winning field goal.

But as Swift said last week, Williams sets the tone for these magical moments.

“When he gets into those situations, he’s just poised,” Swift said. “Real calm. You can see it in the way he’s commanding the offense and with his execution.”

His teammates feed off of that. Tonight, Swift fed off his quarterback’s unwavering confidence and helped put Chicago in a position to win again.

The Best One Yet for D’Andre Swift

In Week 4, Swift benefited from Williams’ magic on the final drive. Tonight, he was the workhorse. But Swift’s work wasn’t limited to the final drive.

Swift rushed for 108 yards on 14 carries (7.7) tonight, and added 67 yards and a touchdown on two receptions in the receiving game tonight. Performances like tonight have been few and far between for Swift since arriving in Chicago, but these are why he got paid two years ago and why Ben Johnson has remained faithful in him.

The running lanes were better tonight, a credit to Johnson and the offensive line, but Swift deserves all the credit in the world for taking advantage of them.

Swift hasn’t been good this season, and will probably never live up to his contract in Chicago, but he did well enough tonight to stay in Johnson’s circle of trust.

    So, You’re Saying There’s a Chance?

During last week’s BN Bears Podcast, I asked Matt and Luis if Chicago could find eight more wins this season to get to 10. We all agreed that the path starts with winning in Washington tonight.

With that in the books, and the number to 10 now at seven, I’m feeling pretty good about the Bears chances.

Over the next four weeks, the Bears play New Orleans, Cincinnati, Baltimore, and the New York Giants. At this point, being at 7-2 or 6-3 is very realistic.

    Bears Game Balls

Hey, we get to hand out some game balls again today!

Caleb Williams: 17-of-29, 252, a touchdown through the air and on the ground, and no turnovers to go along with a 98.6 passer rating. Oh, and another clutch fourth-quarter drive to set up a game-winning field goal. Jake Moody: Cut from San Francisco, Moody gets the call at lunchtime and hits 4-of-5, including the game-winner. Onions. D’Andre Swift: It was, without a doubt, his best game in a Bears jersey. There were noticeably more running lanes tonight, and to Swift’s credit, he took advantage of them. Swift was legitimately a threat in the rushing and passing game tonight, and that’s something we all knew he could be; the issue is the frequency with which we’ve been able to say that—nonetheless, a hat tip to No. 4 tonight.
