What Is the Viral Pretzel Chain Hack?
In her Instagram video, Katon shared this simple trick by saying “Today I learned how to make a pretzel chain and I’m forever changed. It feels like magic!” Her Halloween-themed pretzel chains (complete with spooky orange and black edible accents) is a fun way to make fall feel special, even if it does take some time. She explained that she didn’t invent the idea but was inspired after seeing versions of it on social media. Katon, who is known for her custom cupcakes, also turned the pretzel chain into an accessory for a pretzel chain slinky dog inspired by Toy Story. (See the TikTok video below.)
The method is straightforward: Break off a small piece of a pretzel loop. Link another pretzel onto it. Dab the ends of the broken piece onto a wet paper towel, then reattach. Hold it for about 10 seconds until the pretzel loop “magically” reforms.Repeat the process, and before you know it, you’ll have a beautifully connected chain of pretzels. It’s one of those “why didn’t I think of that?” ideas that feels almost too simple to be real, but it actually works.

I spoke with Katon about the hack, and she says that it’s not as hard as it looks, though a bit of patience helps.“You won’t find it hard to do at all,” she tells Parade. “I think it’s an easier activity for older kids—maybe eight and up—because it requires some dexterity and patience. The hardest part is breaking the pretzel in the right place without shattering it! But once you get the hang of it, you can make a pretty long chain in about ten minutes.”
She used Snyder’s mini pretzels for her chains but noted that other brands could work too. The key is finding a brand of pretzel that will break cleaning without shattering. Mini pretzels that are on the thinner side seem to work best.
If you’ve seen other versions of the hack online, you might’ve noticed some people licking the pretzel ends to “glue” them together, which is a method that works surprisingly well but may not be ideal for parties or family gatherings. Katon’s version uses a wet paper towel to moisten the pretzel ends instead, keeping things more hygienic for shared spaces.“You’ll be able to move the chain pretty quickly after assembling it,” she adds. “But to be safe, maybe give it five minutes to dry before picking the whole thing up.”That drying time helps strengthen the bonds and ensures your pretzel chain doesn’t break when you lift it, and it is necessary, as I quickly learned.
As for what to do with the finished product, Katon recommends treating it more like decor than a snack.“I think of it more as a party trick or decor element and less of an accessory,” she says. “You could technically wear it as a necklace, but it might fall apart easily—it’s pretty delicate. I’ve been thinking of trying it as garland on a small Christmas tree.”

What Happened When I Made a Pretzel Chain Myself
Of course, I had to try it myself, and it was just as delightful as Katon promised.I set up a small craft station with a plate of mini pretzels and a damp paper towel, but we switched to a cup of water to dip the broken pretzel ends before linking them together. It worked beautifully, though we quickly learned the importance of patience (and drying time). A few pieces fell apart because we moved too fast, but it didn’t take away from the fun.
We also learned to make a continuous chain. Don't make a few small pieces with the hopes of connecting them together later, like I did, because the chain breaks easily. Even after drying, some inks fell off the chain when I picked it up, so be aware that this is something that can happen, but that's part of the fun!
My eldest son, who loves LEGOs and anything involving building, was completely hooked (pun intended!). Even my husband joined in, competing to see who could make the longest unbroken chain. It became an unexpectedly sweet family moment that reminded me that the best holiday traditions often come from trying something new and laughing through the process.
What makes this pretzel chain hack so special is its simplicity. In a season often filled with stress and to-do lists, it’s a small way to pause and connect. You don’t need fancy supplies or hours of prep time, just a handful of pretzels and a bit of imagination.
