Broncos bringing in Treylon Burks shows Denver’s lack of playmaking WRs ...Middle East

The Denver Broncos are bringing in Treylon Burks for a visit this week.

His visit was announced before the Broncos beat the Jets in London. And their lack of passing prowess against New York continues to show why they need another wideout.

Broncos bringing in Treylon Burks to possibly boost wide receiver playmaking

Denver’s pass game struggled on Sunday in London, with only 168 yards on the day, and no receivers really stood out.

The only consistent playmaker at wideout this year has been Courtland Sutton. He currently leads the team with 382 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Rewind to before the season started, and Mike Clay of ESPN gave the Broncos wide receivers a 3-out-of-10 grade. In fact, they were the lowest-rated receiver room in the NFL on Clay’s projections.

    And now we’re seeing why.

Troy Franklin is second on the team in receptions (24) and yards (250) to Sutton, but he hasn’t blossomed this year like many had hoped. And while Marvin Mims enjoyed a breakout season down the stretch of 2024, we haven’t seen him make those same splash plays this year.

Behind them are Pat Bryant and Trent Sherfield, with three and four receptions, respectively.

And newly acquired tight end Evan Engram has been volatile in his production this season. He was basically a no-show for the first month of the season, but has finally become part of the offense the last few games. Still, there’s no doubt Denver was hoping for more when they brought him in.

The Broncos bringing Treylon Burks in for a visit seems to indicate they need more playmaking at receiver.

Burks is a 6’2″ 225-pound receiver who was a first-round pick of Tennessee’s back in 2022. That 2022 season was his best as a professional, racking up 33 receptions for 444 yards and 1 touchdown. All said, he has 53 receptions for 699 yards and that one score as a professional.

He was waived by the Titans last week and had been on injured reserve since training camp when he broke his collarbone. A usual timeline for the injury depends on severity and can range from 6-12 weeks or longer. That means, he may be ready to go at this point.

Obviously, team doctors will get a look at the collarbone as part of the visit this week.

    Denver needs more intermediate passing

The Broncos offense when passing this year has been mostly dinking and dunking, with the occasional shot thrown in here and there.

What the team has been missing has been the intermediate routes, from 10-20 yards, which Engram was likely supposed to provide.

A quick look at Broncos receivers’ yards before the catch per reception shows the shortness of routes run.

Courtland Sutton is at 9.7 yards before the catch per reception. That makes sense because he’s the most consistent intermediate-to-deep target the team has.

Conversely, Troy Franklin is at a mere 4.7 yards and Marvin Mims is 2.9 yards run before reception. Even Engram runs only 3.6 yards before the ball is thrown to him on average. Those are all three dink and dunk receivers right there.

On the other hand, Burks has been both an intermediate and deep threat with the Titans. He averaged 8.6, 9.4, and 7.3 (2024) yards before the catch per reception in his career.

Burks has three 51-plus yard receptions, too, showcasing his ability to go deep when needed.

Currently, Bo Nix’ 7.0 air yards per throw are tied for 5th-lowest in the NFL. When teams know you’re going to throw it short regularly, the linebackers and even safeties can suck up to the line of scrimmage to stop those dinks and dunks.

The result is a poor passing game, much like what we saw on Sunday in the Broncos-Jets game. Denver threw for a mere 168 yards on the day, which was not great. It was their third-worst game of the year, though, showing a glaring need to pick up the passing attack somewhere.
