Kicker Jake Moody Elevated to Gameday Roster Ahead of Week 6 Showdown on MNF

The Chicago Bears announced some roster moves ahead of their Monday Night Football game against the Washington Commanders. There were also a pair of moves that were not made that pique my interest. Let’s discuss.

Chicago Bears Week 6 Roster Moves — Moody Up, Booker and Homer Stay on IR

Reinforcements are on the way for the Bears in Week 6. However, they might not be the ones any of us were expecting heading into the upcoming game against the Commanders.

The Bears announced that kicker Jake Moody and defensive lineman Jonathan Ford have been promoted from the practice squad and placed on the active roster. Teams adding an extra defensive lineman to the gameday roster isn’t out of the ordinary. And when you consider how poorly Chicago’s football team has played against the run this year, anyone who could help in the trenches will be welcomed with open arms. With that being said, rostering two kickers on game day is weird and a bit unexpected.

Jake Moody joins Cairo Santos as a kicker who is eligible to play in tonight’s game against the Commanders. Santos was on the injury report all week because of a thigh injury, but was a full participant in practice all week long. However, despite the full week of practice, Santos was listed as questionable to play in tonight’s game. The questionable designation after three straight full participation practices makes me wonder about Santos’ injury and potential availability.

Will Cairo kick at all? Is Moody just around for kickoffs? Is this like a college situation where the team has a different kicker for long-range field goals and another for short-range kicks? This is curious, and I wonder what the thinking is behind this move. It might be as simple as having insurance in case something happens to Santos during the game. The Bears brought Moody in to spruce up the competition among the specialists, but it still felt like Santos’ job was safe. Again, there is something off about this situation. Perhaps we’ll have more later (if not, tomorrow).

As for the moves the Bears didn’t make, defensive lineman Austin Booker and running back Travis Homer were not activated from injured reserve. Both players were downgraded to out for Monday’s game and remain on injured reserve with a designation to return. I thought we were going to see Booker’s return from IR this week to help provide a boost to what has been a disappointing pass rush. But I suppose we’ll have to wait until next week to see if Booker will be ready. At a minimum, this gives Chicago’s front office another week to figure out which two players will be cleared off the roster to accomodate the return of Booker and Homer from IR.
