Latvia vs England Prediction: Tuchel’s Clean-Sheet Kings Out to Seal World Cup Qualification

England have the chance to seal qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday. Find out how likely they are to do it with our Latvia vs England prediction and preview.

Latvia vs England: The Key Stats

The Opta supercomputer rates England as the overwhelming favourites to win this game and secure their spot at next year’s FIFA World Cup, with the Three Lions winning the encounter 84.3% of the time. England have kept eight clean sheets in their last nine matches, and are yet to concede a goal in this World Cup qualifying campaign. This will be only the second match between Latvia and England. The first came back in March this year when England won 3-0 at Wembley.

Although Thomas Tuchel was disappointed not to see his England side build on a three-goal lead against Wales on Thursday, the Three Lions boss was impressed with the performance of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The Everton shot-stopper wrote his name into the history books after his clean sheet against Wales at Wembley, becoming the first England goalkeeper to go eight consecutive matches without conceding a goal.

Pickford had previously shared the record of seven with Gordon Banks, having reached that milestone in 2021. Banks’ streak came in 1966 and was ended by Eusebio in the FIFA World Cup semi-final that year.

England are yet to concede a competitive goal in five matches under Tuchel, with Pickford’s five clean sheets in UEFA’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers the most of any goalkeeper. They’ll look to extend that run on Tuesday against Latvia, with a place at next year’s tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico on the line.

With Serbia losing 1-0 to Albania on Saturday, England know a win in Riga will guarantee their spot at the 2026 World Cup, and with his players in form at both ends of the pitch, Tuchel will be aiming to get the job done with the minimum of fuss.

England have kept eight clean sheets in their last nine matches; their only blemish in this run came in a 3-1 friendly defeat against Senegal in June, when Dean Henderson played in goal.

It shows the strength of the defence in front of him that Pickford has only had to make one save in the five qualifying matches.

Prior to this international break, 24 of the 54 nations competing in UEFA qualification for the 2026 World Cup had played just two matches, compared to England’s five. Yet despite playing more matches than most, Tuchel’s team faced fewer shots on target than any other side (one), going 316 minutes without facing a single effort on goal since their last meeting with Latvia in March.

Pickford has now kept 40 clean sheets for England, leaving him 18 shy of Peter Shilton’s all-time record.

Tuchel has already forged a solid defensive unit with his England side, but at times early in his tenure it seemed that had come at the cost of some attacking flair. However, England have scored eight goals across their last two games.

Going forwards, they will look to capitalise against a struggling Latvia side that have won just once in their qualifying campaign, an away victory against Andorra. They only won one of their six UEFA Nations League fixtures in 2024, too.

Latvia have lost their last 14 matches against sides in the top 10 of the men’s FIFA World Rankings by an aggregate score of 41-1. They last avoided defeat in a 0-0 draw at Euro 2004 against Germany.

Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly will be hoping to make his senior international debut after watching on from the bench against Wales, while Eberechi Eze, Dan Burn and Jarell Quansah were all also unused substitutes last time out. The latter has now withdrawn from England’s squad due to a knee injury. Ollie Watkins has also been ruled out with a knock, so Harry Kane could come back into the side after being rested on Thursday.

While Tuchel has plenty of forward options at his disposal, he is seemingly looking for consistency in his midfield selection. Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson have started together in each of the last three matches, with the latter once again proving his quality at international level against Wales.

Anderson created two chances for England in that game, completing 96.1% of his passes (74/77) and regaining possession six times before being replaced in the 69th minute.

    Latvia vs England Head-to-Head

This will be only the second ever meeting between Latvia and England, with the first coming in March earlier this year when the Three Lions won 3-0 at Wembley thanks to goals from Reece James, Kane and Eze.

Latvia will be the 72nd nation England have played an away match against; they have won their last three maiden away games against a nation (3-2 vs Slovenia in 2015, 3-0 vs Lithuania in 2015 and 4-0 vs Kosovo in 2019).

England have won each of their last five away matches in all competitions, their best run since November 2008 – they last won six consecutive away games between May 1970 and December 1971.

    Latvia vs England Prediction

England are the clear favourites, given a whopping 84.3% win probability by the Opta supercomputer.

The chance of Latvia snatching three points against the odds is 7.3%, while the likelihood of a draw is 8.4%.
