Luke Humphries instantly joins exclusive two-man club and can deny Luke Littler’s chance at darts history

Luke Humphries emulated darting icons by reaching the final of the World Grand Prix, where he will try to deny Luke Littler history.

Humphries dispatched Danny Noppert in his semi-final, surviving a tough challenge to win 5-3 in Leicester on Saturday.

The World No.1 flew into a 4-1 lead against Noppert before struggling to deal with his opponent’s impressive performance.

After losing two sets, he managed to regain his composure, and he got the job done, hitting 14 180s throughout the match.

Humphries has now booked his spot in the showpiece for the third consecutive year, winning in 2023 and losing in 2024.

Only two other darts players have ever managed to achieve that.

One of them is the iconic Phil Taylor and the other is six-time Grand Prix champion Michael van Gerwen.

“It’s a great achievement to be honest, this is a really, really tough tournament,” Humphries said post-match.

“It doesn’t matter how good you are, who you are, this is a really tough tournament to do well in.

“To make three finals on the trot, that’s really something special.

“You really have to have two aspects of your game working well.

“You can be a great scorer and miss a few doubles, you can’t get away with it.”

Who would have thought it? It’s Humphries vs Littler in the final.

Littler beat former champion Jonny Clayton 5-1 in his semi, cruising through and reaching his first showpiece in this event.

The World No.1 and No.2 meet for the sixth time in a final and Littler will be eyeing revenge for defeat in the Premier League.

The 18-year-old is also looking to make some darts history and become the youngest ever winner of the World Grand Prix.

Van Gerwen is the incumbent record holder having been 23 years old when he beat Mervyn King in the 2012 final to win the tournament.

He said: “I’m glad to get through to the final. As the game went on, Jonny was at my back, but I’m very happy to get it done.”

Then, on facing Humphries, he added: “I owe him one of the Premier League. I look forward to it very much, we’re one and two…hopefully, I win it tomorrow and I’m on his back for the No.1 spot.”
