Support Ballot Measure 6A for Evans Fire Protection District
On Thanksgiving night 2022, a reckless driver crashed into our home, rupturing the gas line and starting a fire. Evans Fire Protection District responded immediately, and I will never forget the compassion and professionalism they showed that night. They didn’t just put out the fire — they checked on us, kept us updated and stayed through the night to make sure nothing reignited.
But their kindness didn’t stop there. A few months later, several firefighters used their own resources and personal time to rebuild the fence that had been destroyed. They still remembered us a year later and asked if we needed anything as we were rebuilding. Even now, nearly three years later, they affectionately remember us as the “Thanksgiving House” and continue to ask how we’re doing. That kind of heart and dedication is rare — and it’s something our community can’t afford to lose.
Today, the Evans Fire Protection District faces increasing calls for service and rising expenses, while its revenue is expected to decline. This November, Evans voters have the opportunity to support Ballot Measure 6A, which would create a 1% sales tax on nonessential purchases within Evans.
This small increase will allow the district to fully staff and equip their team, operate two fire trucks simultaneously, and meet national safety standards. I can only imagine what would have happened if EFPD hadn’t been able to respond as quickly as they did that night.
Please join me in voting yes on Ballot Measure 6A — because their readiness could save a home, a life, or a family just like yours. This fire district is special, and it shows in how they care and respond to every call.

There are 2 First Amendments today
A lot of news today discusses our First Amendment rights. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states that individuals have the right to freedom of religion, speech, press and assembly. There is nothing in the First Amendment that distinguishes the persons skin color or their citizenship status. I have to wonder the way the Trump administration treats nonwhite undocumented people. The removal of press members of organizations whom the president doesn’t like seems to differ from freedom of the press.
However what really bothers me is that there seems to be two types of freedom speech with the Trump administration. The First Amendment for the Trump administration allows them to say whatever they want. They can berate a person (President Obama, Jimmy Kimmel, Volodymyr Zelenskyy) or berate a country or organizations (the United Nations, the Smithsonian for displays of slavery because “it makes our country look bad”). Some of their statements are blatantly false, but the First Amendment is not necessarily about truth but freedom to express yourself.
Then we have the Trump administration’s First Amendment for the rest of America. That First Amendment says “thou shalt not oppose the president, his cabinet or any of their policies.” If you disagree or have another opinion you or your organization shall be subject to: 1. drastic cuts in federal funding unless you comply, 2. drastic cuts in staffing (50% or more) or elimination of your entire department or 3. threatened with legal action unless you comply.
Many of these actions have been temporarily blocked by federal and state judges only to have them unblocked by the U.S. Supreme Court. The whole situation has created chaos and uncertainty for our country.
It seems our country has two different First Amendments.

Americans must resist Trump’s bait
The lesson of, “four dead in Ohio.” May 1970.
One thing that citizens fear is anarchy. The president of the U.S. is trying to convince Americans that military presence is required in United States, to reduce the risk of civil disobedience. Trump’s goal is autocracy. Law and order are fundamental precepts for any type of government. It was promoted by Christ as necessity for civil cohesion.
When I examine the First Amendment to the Constitution, the extreme outliers of each party are gathering momentum. This amendment was created to allow discourse. Division was not its purpose.
The presence of military/civil tension increases the probability of a Kent State type exchange. It was the class differences that produced the anarchy of 1970. Working class vs elite college students. The lessons we learned then, have prevented major clashes today.
The potential is there if Donald Trump has his way. That is the door we cannot open. He will try repeatedly to open it. City by city. It is that bait that Americans must resist to remain in a neutral condition. Donald Trump is determined to win America. Time will swallow his ambition, and the earth will eventually reclaim his remains. His followers will meet the same fate. When history writes Trump’s chapter, the only thing that people will remember about President 45/47 is that he sold novelties, and his presidential library is a customized 747 jet. If you can afford the entrance fee, you will get a choice of red hats with various promos on them. You can also contribute to the Help Me Get to Heaven foundation.
I pray that Americans understand the value of dialog. Singularity produces despair, not victory.
