Albert Pujols met with Angels general manager Perry Minasian on Thursday regarding the team’s open managerial role, a source confirmed on Friday.
Although Pujols is considered one of the leading candidates, it remains uncertain if Pujols will ultimately get the job. Torii Hunter, who works as a special assistant in the Angels’ front office, is also expected to considered for the job.
Pujols, 45, managed last winter in the Dominican Republic and he is set to manage the Dominican team in the World Baseball Classic again next year.
Pujols played 10 seasons with the Angels, from 2012 to 2021, on a $240 million deal. In addition to that contract, he signed a 10-year, $10 million personal services contract with the Angels. Since Pujols retired, he has fulfilled that contract by helping for a few days in spring training and working with Angels minor leaguers.
The Angels declined the option on Ron Washington’s deal after he spent two seasons managing the Angels.
