Last season’s Bears-Commanders matchup ended in heartbreak for Chicago — a game that was supposed to be a statement win turned into the start of a freefall. What looked like a 5-2 team ready to climb into contention instead unraveled after Jayden Daniels’ miracle Hail Mary slipped through Tyrique Stevenson’s hands and into Noah Brown’s arms. That moment triggered a 10-game losing streak, cost coaches their jobs, and tested rookie quarterback Caleb Williams through a turbulent first season.
This time, the Bears return to Washington looking more stable and confident under first-year head coach Ben Johnson. At 2-2, Chicago has a chance to climb above .500 and build real momentum with a favorable stretch ahead against struggling teams like the Saints, Ravens, Bengals, and Giants.
Monday night’s primetime game isn’t just another rematch — it’s an opportunity to flip the script from a year ago and start trending upward.

Mandatory Credit: Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn ImagesWilliams’ development has been central to that optimism. The 23-year-old has thrown for 927 yards, eight touchdowns, and just two interceptions in four games, showing steady growth and poise in Johnson’s system. His matchup against Daniels — last season’s Offensive Rookie of the Year — adds another layer, as the two headline a 2024 quarterback class that’s quickly reshaping the NFL.
“It’s a pretty badass class, right?” Williams said when asked about the 2024 quarterback class on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Stevenson’s own turnaround mirrors the team’s. A year removed from his lowest moment, the now 25-year-old corner has matured both on and off the field, stepping up in Jaylon Johnson’s absence and finding motivation as a new father. For a Bears team trying to shed the weight of last season’s collapse, returning to the site where it all began could offer a fitting place to start writing a new story.

Every week, our Chicago Bears writers will give you their Bears player to watch in the matchup ahead. Three Bears is a staple of these previews, and with Bears coverage expanding this season, I thought it would be cool to involve all of the Bears thinkers in the exercise.
Patrick Flowers: Caleb Williams — It’s another shot at a homecoming win for the Maryland native, Caleb Williams. More importantly, it’s a chance for Williams and the Bears to get above .500 with a stretch of very winnable games over the next month ahead of them. If Chicago can go into D.C. and beat the Commanders in primetime, we could be talking about a 7-2 or 6-3 team a month from now.
Luis Medina: Dayo Odeyingbo — The Bears forked over a hefty amount of cash to bring in Odeyingbo as a free agent because the team believed in his athleticism, skill, and untapped potential as a difference-maker along the defensive line. But since coming up with 1 sack, 2 QB hits, and 1 TFL in Week 1, Odeyingbo has been a non-factor. That needs to change if Chicago is going to win this game.
Matt Rooney: Theo Benedet — It’s likely going to be Benedet’s game at left tackle. Braxton Jones got the first crack at taking the left tackle job, and he couldn’t do it. Now, Benedet gets a chance coming off the bye week on Monday Night Football. Hopefully, we don’t even notice him on Monday night. No news would be good news coming from the left tackle position. Fortunately, he doesn’t have Maxx Crosby going up against him this time. But he’ll have his work cut out for him in a big spot.
