Country Star ‘Honored’ to Cut Toby Keith’s Unreleased Demo From the Vault Years Later

Ernest is forever grateful to have had an opportunity to be a part of keeping Toby Keith’s legacy alive. The country star, 33, just released a reimagined version of a song called “End of the Night” from the late icon’s vault.

Out today, Friday, Oct. 10, and available exclusively on Apple Music, the tune—written by Keith, alongside David Lee Murphy and Bobby Pinson—dropped as part of Apple Music’s second installment of Lost & Found, a program that makes previously unreleased tracks available to fans.

For Ernest, whose full name is Ernest Keith Smith, breathing new life into what was initially a raw demo finds him not only reflecting on the journey of the song, but also remembering just how much of an irreplaceable artist Keith was to so many fans who loved him.

“You know, I’ll never be able to sing a Toby Keith song as good as Toby Keith can sing a Toby Keith song, but I’m gonna give it hell to sing it the best that I can, for sure,” Ernest said in a statement of how he reimagined the original raw demo recording to make it his own. “It’s cool to hear how raw it was, and how much energy and how much power… til the day he died, that man sang with everything.”

“It’s our honor and duty as country singers to keep the spirit alive of those that went on before us,” Ernest continued. “I think that’s what makes country music great.”

Written over a decade ago in August 2015, and newly recorded in Spacial Audio, “End of the Night” features a relaxed and breezy melody along with the lyrics: “It ain't the end of the world / No, it ain't even close / Can't keep holding on to the end of that road / It ain't the end of the road / There's still a whole lot to ride / It ain't the end of the world / Just the end of the night / Ah, yeah.”

“End of the Night” is the first taste of the series launch with more reimagined songs to come by some of the most buzz-worthy artists in the business. Those new to the series should know that the “lost” part of the program features original recordings from award-winning songwriters, while the “found” half of the program offers new reimagined versions of the tracks by their star-studded counterparts.

“This was always one of my favorites, and it was Ernest’s favorite too,” Pinson shared in a statement. “He did a great job on it. When [Apple Music] asked me about this project and said, ‘What do we have?’ it was like Christmas. It was like finding a dollar in your pocket.”

“The day we wrote it, we were laughing so hard, feeling like it was a hit,” added Murphy.

“Honored to have the chance to cut 'End of the Night,' written by the legend,  @tobykeith and the amazing @davidleemurphy and @therealbobbypinson, it was  uncovered as part of @applemusic Lost & Found. Listen now exclusively on Apple Music,” Ernest captioned a video on Instagram, in which he opened up about his recorded version of the track.

Toby Keith Was Just as Big a Songwriter as He Was an Artist

As many may or may not know, Keith was just as prolific a songwriter as he was a performing artist with a distinctive voice. He co-wrote many of his own hits, including “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” “Wish I Didn’t Know Now,” and “Don’t Let the Old Man In.”

He was also inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Ernest, meanwhile, is certainly no stranger to shining a light on some of the best tunesmiths’ music city has to offer. He previously released 2024’s Nashville, Tennessee album, which pays homage to his hometown city and features a slew of collaborations with other artists, including Jelly Roll, Hardy, and Lainey Wilson.

“We live in the greatest city for songwriting of all time, so there’s an endless amount of songs,” Ernest shared. “Every now and then you get to pull a little diamond outta there and a little piece of history, and this is no exception.”
