WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats have introduced a bill that would protect federal workers and their families from foreclosures, evictions, and loan defaults during a government shutdown.
New York Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer are among the 17 co-sponsors of the Federal Employee Civil Relief Act. Gillibrand said federal workers are at risk of losing their homes, falling behind on student loans, having their car repossessed, or losing their health insurance because of the ongoing government shutdown.

While some workers have been furloughed, others, such as air traffic controllers and TSA agents are required to work without pay until Congress reaches a funding agreement. Friday marks day 10 of the government shutdown, with the Senate still stuck in a loop of failed votes.
