Quarterback play in the SEC has been a hot topic for a variety of reasons this season, but Week 7 saw two of the league’s stars put forth some of their best performances of the year.
Florida‘s DJ Lagway and Alabama‘s Ty Simpson were both recognized by the Davey O’Brien Award for their winning efforts last Saturday, as they were included the organization’s weekly ‘Great 8’ list.

Both of those scoring tosses came during a second quarter when Alabama rallied from an early 7-0 hole to take control of the game.
Meanwhile, the much-maligned Lagway broke through with a performance many fans expected to see more frequently this fall. The sophomore completed 21-of-28 passes for 298 yards and a pair of touchdowns during the Gators’ 29-21 win over Texas, and it was a true breakthrough for an offense that had not eclipsed the 20-point mark since Week One.
Lagway was also helped by the debut of blue-chip freshman Dallas Wilson, who recently recovered from an offseason injury and led Florida with 6 catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns.
Simpson and Lagway joined Miami’s Carson Beck, Navy’s Blake Horvath, UCLA’s Nico Iamaleava, Arkansas State’s Jaylen Raynor and Cincinnati’s Brendan Sorbsy on the list.
