University Schools to honor founding director Greg Pierson

University Schools in Greeley will honor an original member of its school community later this week by renaming the first building at the West 18th Street charter school.

The building will be renamed the Greg N. Pierson Building in honor of Pierson, a founding director of University, educator and coach.

The official dedication of the building will be Friday evening during halftime of University’s home football game against Wellington. The game begins at 7 p.m.  A pregame reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the main building, 6525 W. 18th St.

Pierson was a principal, teacher and coach at the University Lab School from 1977-91. The lab school was located in the old Bishop-Lehr Hall on UNC campus. The school was the predecessor to the current University Schools. Pierson returned to the area in 2001 to oversee the transition to West 18th Street, and he remained with University until his retirement in 2006. He currently lives in Loveland.

“I don’t know anyone who could’ve done such a good job,” University Schools Board of Governors’ member Ryan Mayeda said of Pierson’s work leading University as a new independent charter school. “I really don’t know if anyone else other than Greg could’ve come back and done such a great job inspiring families to keep it going and keep the legacy going. I think it would’ve lost a lot of what made University Schools University Schools (without Pierson).”

Pierson was a teacher, coach, athletic director, assistant principal and principal at the University Lab School. He left in 1991 to be the principal for seven years at Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs. Pierson then spent three years as a principal in Englewood before returning to Greeley. He came back for the final year of the lab school at UNC. Pierson also helped with the design of the building at the new site.

“It was one of those things that I couldn’t say no to,” Pierson said. “I’m a bulldog (the University mascot).”

A dozen people proposed the building’s renaming in a letter sent to the University Schools Board of Governors in August. The group, including Mayeda, a 1996 University graduate, cited Pierson’s contagious enthusiasm and spirit for University and its students.

The letter also mentioned the 1982 University baseball team Pierson coached to a state championship. He remains connected to the team today.

“Greg provided a caring, stable environment for faculty, staff, students, and families in a time of change,” while securing University’s future, the letter also said. “He was a leader who maintained the best of a laboratory school while moving toward our present-day outstanding charter school, one of the first and longest established charter schools in Colorado.”

Rene Gonzalez, right, and Greg Pierson talk to people interested in filling the positions at Salida Del Sol Academy during the University of Northern Colorado Teacher Employment Days on Thursday at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion in Greeley. The school was looking to fill around 40 positions.

Pierson’s work in the area also included establishing the University Schools Foundation to support financial needs and engage alumni, co-founding the dual-language charter school Salida de Sol Academy and creating a career pathways model of educating and teaching high school students.

“It means a lot to me because I was there for so many years, and I’ve known so many people,” Pierson said of the building renaming. “It really does have a special place in my heart. Watching it evolve, opening the new school. I served on the board (the board of governors) for a while. I tried to give back everything I could because it means so much.”
