Bulls Win Preseason Opener Thanks to Clutch Defense By Dalen Terry!

It may not count, but the Chicago Bulls picked up their first victory of the 2025-26 season on Tuesday night.

Facing off against the Cleveland Cavaliers in their first of five preseason games, the Bulls walked off the Rocket Arena court with a narrow 118-117 victory. With most starters and rotation players on the bench in the fourth quarter, Jevon Carter was responsible for giving Chicago the 118-116 advantage with 36.9 seconds left on the clock. Luke Travers would fight his way to the charity stripe on the next possession for Cleveland, but he missed the mark on his second freebie.

The Cavaliers went on to get the defensive stand they needed by forcing the Bulls’ Yuki Kawamura into a tough triple. Thomas Bryant snatched the rebound with 4.4 seconds left and started to go coast-to-coast. Matched up favorably with the smaller Dalen Terry, the big man drove his way into the paint for the attempted game-winner.

    Then, Terry played hero.

The Bulls’ fourth-year wing left his feet and swatted Bryant’s shot into the bleachers. To be sure, the refs would go on to put 0.3 seconds left on the clock, which led to a failed inbound play by the Cavaliers. But let’s make no mistake: It was Terry’s defense that clinched the Bulls the opening night victory!

Seriously, you have to give Terry a ton of credit for (1) the timing of that swat, and (2) avoiding a foul there. Bryant had a step on him and the size advantage, yet Terry still got the job done.

For someone who is entering a contract year without a defined role in this Bulls rotation, this is the kind of stuff you want to see. These five preseason games could go a long way toward earning Terry the minutes he ultimately needs this season to prove his worth at the NBA level. Especially when we consider the Bulls’ emphasis on the defensive end this year, moments like these are going to stand out to head coach Billy Donovan.

Nevertheless, tonight’s victory came with plenty of other encouraging moments. Matas Buzelis picked up right where he left off last season with 19 points and 8 rebounds in a well-rounded showing. Ayo Dosunmu looked like his pre-shoulder-surgery self with 12 points on 5-6 shooting from the field in 19 minutes. Tre Jones showed why the front office made him a priority this summer with 10 points and 4 steals, playing a huge role in helping the Bulls steal the lead in the second quarter. All good stuff!

The Bulls as a whole finished the night with 28 points in the fastbreak and an impressive 51.9 percent success rate from the field. The offense was humming with consistent off-ball movement and transition hustle. As for the defense, while they still have a long way to go, there is no question that this looked like a far more engaged group on that side of the ball.
