Boys state golf Day 2: Frontier Academy makes school history with team title

Throughout the two-day Class 2A boys golf state championships at Elmwood Golf Course in Pueblo, the upstart Frontier Academy program never blinked.

Instead, it chipped, putted, pared and birdied its way to school history.

    With an impressive 32-over-par two-day team score of 452, the Wolverines comfortably topped the team standings of the state tournament.

    Forge Christian was second, shooting a 466.

    Frontier had just a three-stroke lead over Forge after Monday’s Day 1 before outshooting the Fury by 11 strokes during Tuesday’s second and final day.

    The Wolverines clinched the first boys golf team title in program history.

    Talented sophomore Isaiah Fowler led Frontier throughout the two rounds, and in the process, he fell just inches short of his own individual state title.

    Fowler tied Swink senior Noah Pearson for first place but lost a tiebreaking playoff to Pearson.

    Fowler finished with a 3-over-par two-day score of 143 (73-70). He ascended up the leaderboard and held the top spot for much of the afternoon after wrapping up Day 1 tied for fifth.

    He tied for sixth at state a season ago.

    Fowler had plenty of support as he and his team made school history.

    Junior Canton Sandstrom (78-79) and senior Hayden Leblount (83-74) each shot a 17-over-par 157 to tie for 20th, individually. Junior Owen Steward tied for 41st (78-87-165).

    Each team’s top 3 golfers contributed to team scoring.

    Windsor Charter Academy freshman Braylon Ball placed ninth overall in the 2A individual leaderboard, shooting a 10-over-par 150 (78-72).

    Northridge junior Everett Lewis also fell just short of an individual state title while competing in the 4A state tournament at the Fox Hill Club in Longmont.

    After sitting tied with Air Academy senior Jack Moats and Grand Junction senior Hunter Simmons for first after Monday’s Day 1, Lewis ultimately tied Mead senior Stryker Leick for second behind Simmons (70-69-139).

    Lewis shot a 1-over-par 141 (70-71).

    Mead took home the team title, shooting a 20-over-par 440, topping runner-up Broomfield (450).

    Windsor placed 13th (473) with a team of junior Austyn Bell (tied-28th, 155), senior Camden Smith (tied-46th, 159), junior Grayson Mischo (tied-51st, 160) and junior Bryce Homann (tied-65th, 165).

    Elite company

    Eaton senior Dayne Schmidke proved he belongs among the 3A classification’s upper tier with a third-place finish in the state tournament at Eagle Ranch Golf Course in Eagle.

    Schmidke shot a 2-under-par, two-day total of 142 (71-71) to finish behind only Lutheran senior Nicholas Brooks (66-68-134) and the runner-up, Peak to Peak senior Jack Brayman (71-70-141).

    Eaton’s other golfer, junior Logan Cole, placed 27th (155).

    Lutheran won the team title, shooting a 4-over-par 436. Timnath was the runner-up, shooting a 447.

    Resurrection Christian placed fifth (456) behind a team consisting of sophomore Levi McDowell (9th, 149), senior Micah Livingstone (21st, 153), senior Cayden Hajek (31st, 156) and senior Mateo Burgos (53rd, 163).

    Severance placed 16th (527) with juniors Darrick Potts (66th, 171), Finnegan Wischmeier (70th, 175) and Jace Walter (83rd, 181).

    Roosevelt senior Pacey Walker and sophomore Braeden Walker each shot 174 to tie for 67th place.
