BRIGHTON, N.Y. – People gathered under their umbrellas as a light rain came down during a vigil marking two years since the October 7th attack that launched a war in the Middle East.
Hamas terrorists killed more than 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped 250 others on Oct. 7, 2023. The Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester organized the community vigil in Brighton.
“We built a Sukkah,” organizer Paul Sanders said. “We decorated it with (pictures of) the hostages and things of that nature.”
One attendee said the vigil was important because it builds connectedness when everyone comes together.
“It allows us to speak with one voice even if we see things in many, many different ways, which of course we do,” Jocelyn Goldberg-Schaible said. “And yet we’re united here together to pay tribute to what happened two years ago.”
Another attendee said they feel insecure two years later because they believe an attack could happen again. But many people said they have hope moving forward.
Sanders said he is optimistic about ongoing negotiations for peace.
“We’ve had some good news recently about a peace plan which was accepted by Israel and backed by about a dozen Muslim countries, and so now we’re all feeling very hopeful about that,” he said. “We’re hopeful that there’s going to be peace and the suffering is going to end. And, you know, it’s a good time for it with this uplifting part of the high holiday season.”
