Two men arrested after hackers steal thousands of nursery children’s data

Police have arrested two men in Hertfordshire on suspicion of computer misuse and blackmail following reports of a cyber-attack on a chain of nurseries in London.

It was revealed last month that hackers had been using stolen pictures, names and addresses of some 8,000 children from the nursery chain Kido to demand ransom money.

Met Police received a tip-off about a ransomware attack on a set of Greater London pre-schools on 25 September.

On Tuesday, detectives investigating the reports conducted a “proactive operation” at several residential properties in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire.

Two men, aged 17 and 22, were taken into custody, where they remain for questioning, the force said.

Will Lyne, the Met’s head of economic and cybercrime, said: “Since these attacks took place, specialist Met investigators have been working at pace to identify those responsible.

“We understand reports of this nature can cause considerable concern, especially to those parents and carers who may be worried about the impact of such an incident on them and their families.”

The BBC said it had been contacted by the hackers, who appear to be called Radiant and have published some stolen data, including pictures and profiles of 10 children on their darknet website.

Information about the children’s parents, carers and safeguarding notes may also be in the hackers’ hands.

Mr Lyne said: “We want to reassure the community and anyone affected that this matter continues to be taken extremely seriously.”

“These arrests are a significant step forward in our investigation, but our work continues, alongside our partners, to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”

Kido has 18 sites across London and Windsor, as well as another 39 nurseries in India, nine in the United States, and offices in Singapore and Houston.

The hack comes in the wake of large-scale cyber attacks on several other organisations this year.

Last month, the Government announced a £1.5 billion loan guarantee for Jaguar Land Rover after the British car manufacturer was forced to suspend production at its UK factories for several weeks following a cyber attack.

Marks & Spencer, Harrods and The Co-operative have also been targeted, with the latter announcing it was set to take a full-year earnings hit of around £120m following an incident in April, while the former suffered a profit hit of up to £300m after a hack halted its online orders for six weeks from Easter weekend.
