It has been nearly four decades since we first met Will Smith — well, “Will Smith” as played by Will Smith, of course — and the rest of the Banks family on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. One of the best sitcoms of all time, the NBC classic introduced the world to iconic TV characters like dance-happy Carlton Banks (Alfonso Ribeiro), stern-but-loving Uncle Phil (James Avery), spoiled-but-sweet Hilary Banks (Karyn Parsons) and sarcastic butler Geoffrey (Joseph Marcell) over its six-season run, and made viewers feel like part of the family along the way.
Soon enough, we’ll see a Banks family reunion on our TV screens: Tatyana Ali — who played the youngest Banks daughter, Ashley — is competing on Dancing with the Stars season 35, which happens to be co-hosted by her Fresh Prince brother, Alfonso Ribeiro. The former on-screen siblings will be back together beginning Tuesday, Sept. 15, with the season’s two-night premiere event kicking off at 8 p.m. on ABC and Disney+.

Will Smith

If you’ve been paying attention to movies or music for the past 30 years, you already know what superstar Will Smith has been up to: The multi-hyphenate has helmed major blockbuster films (including the Bad Boys and Men in Black franchises), was nominated for three Best Actor Oscars (for 2001’s Ali, 2006’s The Pursuit of Happyness and 2021’s King Richard, the latter of which he won and sparked a big slap-happy controversy), and is the patriarch of one of Hollywood’s most famous families. (Wife Jada Pinkett Smith is a famous actress and singer, and his children Trey, Jaden and Willow have all dabbled in the entertainment industry.)
Though things have certainly quieted for Smith following Slapgate, he did release new music last year (his fifth studio album, Based on a True Story) and will next be seen in the upcoming crime thriller Supermax, directed by David Gordon Green and co-starring AnnaSophia Robb, Jaafar Jackson, and Jason Clarke.

Alfonso Ribeiro

Ribeiro reportedly had such a wonderful time starring as Carlton Banks during six seasons of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air that the experience nearly ruined all future acting jobs for the performer. During a June 2026 appearance on Hoda Kotb‘s podcast, the 54-year-old actor said of working with his Fresh Prince cast: “The way we worked together, the way we supported each other was very special…It’s part of why I don’t really act anymore, because that [kind of joy, that kind of support, that kind of creative magic] will never be again.”
But that doesn’t mean Ribeiro hasn’t been a regular TV fixture in recent years: He currently hosts ABC’s video clip series America’s Funniest Home Videos and co-hosts the network’s reality competition series Dancing with the Stars with Julianne Hough. He also memorably won DWTS Season 19 alongside professional dancer Witney Carson.

James Avery
James AveryJames Avery was a busy TV actor before The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but it was his role as Will’s hilariously stern but supportive Uncle Phil that turned him into a household name. Following that NBC sitcom, though, Avery continued in the comedy world with the UPN series Sparks, in which he played the lead role of Alonzo Sparks for two seasons.
The Virginia native continued to appear in popular TV shows — including That ’70s Show, The Closer, NYPD Blue, Grey’s Anatomy and Star Trek: Enterprise — until his death in December 2013. (Avery died at age 68 in Glendale, California, following complications from open-heart surgery.)

Karyn Parsons

Like her former on-screen bro Alfonso Ribeiro, Karyn Parsons largely moved away from acting in the decades following The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Though the 59-year-old did appear in the 2026 crime thriller The Projectionist, written and directed by Alexandre Rockwell.
Nowadays, she’s the founder of the Sweet Blackberry Foundation, which produces animated films and books about unsung black heroes. Parsons has also authored several children’s books, including the middle-grade novel How High the Moon, the picture-book biographies Flying Free (about Bessie Coleman) and Saving the Day (about Garrett Morgan), and this year’s YA novel Blue Beach.

Tatyana Ali

Tatyana Ali was just 17 years old when her time as Ashley Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air wrapped up. After that series ended, Ali released her debut R&B album, Kiss the Sky, in 1998—which was certified gold and featured hit singles “Daydreamin'” and “Boy You Knock Me Out”—and graduated from Harvard University in 2002 with a degree in political science and government.
She resumed her TV acting career with regular roles on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, the TV One original series Love That Girl!, the BET dramedy Second Generation Wayans and the Tyler Perry-produced period drama Perimeter. The 47-year-old still regularly acts—she recently had recurring roles on Abbott Elementary and Bel-Air, and also appeared on the big screen in the 2026 war drama Mr. Nelson, Did You Kill People?—and will next be seen as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars Season 35.

Janet Hubert

After playing the original Vivian Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Janet Hubert‘s time on the NBC series was cut short when she was let go from her contract at the end of the third season, an event that reportedly led to a long estrangement between Hubert and series star Will Smith. (The role of Aunt Viv was recast and subsequently played by actress Daphne Maxwell Reid.)
“I lost everything — reputation, everything — and I understand you were able to move forward, but you know those words — calling a Black woman difficult in Hollywood is the kiss of death,” Hubert said during The Fresh Prince HBO Max reunion special.
However, Hubert has continued working in the industry: The now-70-year-old actress has had main roles on TV series like One Life to Live, General Hospital and, most recently, the Tubi sci-fi series Demascus.

Outside of acting, the 78-year-old is an accomplished photographer and clothing designer; her DaphneStyles fashion line features Chinese silk brocade toppers and linen swing coats, some of which she showed off during the Fresh Prince reunion on HBO Max.
Joseph Marcell
