CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man has been charged with murder after a person was found dead at a park in northeast Charlotte Monday afternoon, officials say.
Around 4:02 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to Devonshire Park in the 6300 block of Barrington Drive for reports of an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.
The victim was found in a wooded area behind the park with a large open wound in his stomach. Medic pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
The victim has yet to be identified by police, but a police report confirms the victim is a 35-year-old Hispanic man.
During the investigation, detectives reviewed surveillance video at a nearby Shell gas station and observed the victim assaulting a man with a large wooden stick and a slingshot. Police say they watched the victim get into the woods, and the man followed shortly after.
According to an affidavit, a witness told detectives the victim was staying with him in a shelter in the woods. The witness stated he and the victim were inside their shelter when two men approached.

The witness said he heard the victim and one of the men got into a fight before he heard a single gunshot and saw Soth flee the scene. The witness returned to the shelter to find that the victim had been stabbed. The witness then called 911.
Discharged shell casings and a handgun were found at the scene, but police did not say if anyone was shot. According to the police reports, the victim was stabbed in the stomach.
Police later charged 53-year-old Natt Soth with first-degree murder in connection with the death.
Later, when detectives interviewed the suspect, he said the victim hit him with a stick and shot rocks at him, and he had gone into the woods to confront him. He says that the victim assaulted him and another Hispanic man.
The suspect allegedly told detectives that the other Hispanic man had grabbed a knife, and when the victim and the suspect got into a fight, he grabbed the knife and stabbed the victim before running away.
Soth is being held at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center under no bond. His next court date is slated for October 28.
