Chicago Bears Injury Update: Austin Booker, Travis Homer Are One Step Closer to Returning

Finally, some good news from the Chicago Bears injury front.

The team announced (via Twitter/X) that it has opened the practice window for defensive lineman Austin Booker and running back Travis Homer. Both players began the 2025 season on injured reserve because of their respective injuries. But now that the practice window for these players is officially open, the Bears have 21 days to upgrade Booker and/or Homer and promote them to the active 53-player roster.

If you were looking for a boost from the Chicago Bears pass rush, just know that help is on the way in the form of Austin Booker’s return.

A Day 3 pick from the 2024 NFL Draft class, Austin Booker looked like he was ready to take a step up during the preseason. The Kansas product stuffed the stat sheet in a major way during Preseason Week 1 as he collected 4 solo tackles, 3 sacks, 3 tackles-for-loss, 4 quarterback hits, and 1 forced fumble. This standout performance came after a quiet training camp where Booker flew under the radar.

To be clear, putting up big numbers in an exhibition game doesn’t necessarily mean that it will translate to the regular season. Bears fans have watched exhibition football long enough to know better than to assume preseason production will make its way to when games count in the regular season. But after four games of underwhelming results, adding a fresh body to the mix could help Chicago’s defense — even if it means that the team has another healthy player to throw in the rotation.

Once Austin Booker returns, he will join Montez Sweat, Dayo Odeyingbo, Tanoh Kpassagnon, Dominique Williams, and Daniel Hardy as healthy defensive ends. With that being said, someone might have to be pushed off the roster bubble. It will be fascinating to see who ends up as the odd man out. Of course, Booker will need to be healthy before we get to and cross that bridge. Booker has been out since August after suffering a knee injury during the team’s Preseason Week 2 win against the Buffalo Bills.

When it comes to the return of Travis Homer, getting some special teams help isn’t something I take for granted. And even though Homer is listed as a running back, I do not expect him to get a significant amount of touches in that aspect of the game. Then again, maybe the Bears should try it out. Maybe they’ll catch lightning in a bottle. Nothing else seems to be working. What is the worst that can happen?
