Fears Resurface About Another Power Strip Ban on Major Cruise Line

Could another power strip ban be on the horizon for Carnival Cruise goers? Travelers once again began to worry following a recent post to Carnival Cruise Brand Ambassador John Heald's Facebook page involving an irate passenger's question about the strips.

"Very infrequently do I get as angry as I am today,” the guest began. “Carnival Cruise Line have banned us from bringing on power strips and chargers. Really?!! There has been no warning. I would not have known this if I had not seen an Instagram video.” The guest goes on to say they're "angry enough to cancel this cruise and take the hit" on their Carnival Sunshine cruise out of Norfolk, Virginia.

While some might question the level of response at a tech gadget—surely a cruise cancellation isn't worth a $9.99 power strip—but the lack of power sources has been a long, ongoing issue for cruisers, with families of four needing more than the typical standardized power strips offered in order to charge phones, iPads, gaming devices and more.

Another big reason? Many cruises require power outlets for CPAP machines, a medical necessity—it's one that can be stressful if adequate power sources are lacking in rooms.

Many have taken to bringing their own power splitters aboard cruise ships to ensure enough ports, but some cruise lines have quietly banned them, sparking outrage. Royal Caribbean banned multiple power splitters last year, stating that the strips could cause overheating, potential power outages and fires, and there was an online hubbub wondering whether Carnival would follow suit.

Carnival was quick to reassure the cruising community at the time, with Heald announcing to Facebook followers that as long as they don't have surge protectors, regular power strips are considered safe enough to use on board.

The question resurfaced again a few days ago on Heald's Facebook page, and he made sure to once again remind cruise goers that Carnival has not changed its policy (with signature pun included.)

“Please calm down as this lady has provided you with the wrong information, no shock there,” he said. “You can bring a power strip. We have not changed our rules and providing it does not have a surge protector and is in excellent working condition then pop it into your carry on and bring it on board.”

In fact, power strips are listed under the “Exemptions and other considerations” subheading on Carnival's Prohibited Items List. “Power strips, multi-plug box outlets/adaptors, and extension cords (without surge protectors) are allowed when used with proper caution. However, if such devices are determined to pose a hazard, they will be removed and returned on debarkation morning.”

As part of its "Be Safe. Have Fun" policy to curb disruptive behavior, Carnival did put a ban on Bluetooth speakers in late 2024 to prevent disturbances and noise pollution in public spaces. The practice was put in place to ensure a peaceful atmosphere for everyone on board and to make sure important cruise announcements can be heard.

Handheld “clack” fans have also been prohibited in nightclubs and any indoor dance floor on Carnival ships, with the cruise line citing safety concerns over the loud “clacking” sound and potential injuries in crowded areas.

Carnival also maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy on cannabis/Marijuana—even with a medical prescription—since it's strictly prohibited by federal maritime law, regardless of its legality in a passenger’s home state.

And despite its popularity as a fun and harmless cruise ship past-time, the practice of hiding ducks around Royal Caribbean's Central Park on its Oasis and Icon Class ships has also been banned by the popular cruise line, to protect the thousands of real plants and trees that comprise these lush onboard neighborhoods, after cruisers started trampling them in search of the funny rubber ducks.
