Anxiety and 8 other symptoms could be warning signs of an ‘acoustic’ brain tumour, doctors find

MANY of us will suffer from anxiety from time to time.

In most cases, it’s usually temporary, triggered by stress at work, school, or something in our personal lives.

GettyAnxiety and vertigo can both be signs of an ‘acoustic’ brain tumour[/caption] Neurological Surgery | Weill Cornell MedicineAcoustic neuromas grow on the nerve used for hearing and balance[/caption]

But new research suggests that if anxiety comes with dizziness or vertigo it might signal an ‘acoustic’ brain tumour.

These tumours, technically known as acoustic neuromas, or vestibular schwannomas (VS), are benign.

They don’t spread like cancer, but they can still be serious because they grow on the nerve that controls hearing and balance.

Over time, this can lead to hearing loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness, and balance problems.

One of the most common and disruptive symptoms is vertigo, where it feels like everything is spinning.

Vertigo affects some VS patients harder than others, and anxiety could be making the symptoms worse, a new study published in JAMA Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery suggests.

For the research, experts from the US looked at 109 adults diagnosed with untreated VS between 2004 and 2025.

Each participant completed questionnaires measuring dizziness and anxiety. The researchers also reviewed their medical records for any history of anxiety.

The study found that patients with a history of anxiety experienced more severe dizziness, scoring higher on the Dizziness Handicap Inventory – a measure of how much dizziness affects daily life.

For every additional point on the anxiety scale, dizziness scores increased by 2.6 points.

Study author, Tyler Wilson, from Washington University told the Daily Mail: “Psychological distress has been found to have an effect on vertigo in patients with diseases and conditions affecting the vestibular system.

“Although these studies have identified the association between vertigo and anxiety disorders, to our knowledge, no study to date has examined the role of anxiety in VS.

“This gap provides the opportunity for other VS interventions such as mindfulness, based stress reduction.”

The 8 other signs of a 'acoustic' brain tumour

SYMPTOMS usually develop gradually at first but can increase over time.

Anxiety is often an early sign and can make other symptoms, like dizziness, feel worse.

Common signs of vestibular schwannoma (VS) include:

Hearing loss, usually in one ear Ringing or other sounds in the ear (tinnitus) The sensation of spinning or movement (vertigo) Persistent headaches Temporary blurred or double vision Numbness, pain, or weakness on one side of the face Problems with coordination on one side of the body (ataxia) Voice changes or difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)

Treatment of the tumour depends on its size and growth.

Many are monitored with scans first.

Surgery is used if it grows, sometimes followed by radiosurgery to stop leftover tissue spreading.

Over 12,000 people in Britain are diagnosed with brain tumours every year, about half of which are cancerous.

VS usually affects adults aged 30 to 60. Most cases have no obvious cause, though a few are linked to a genetic condition called Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2).

Around 1 in 20 patients relapse after surgery, and symptoms like hearing loss and tinnitus can continue.
