Jaxson Dart has gone from hero to zero in just one week.
After getting the win in his first NFL start over MVP candidate Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4, the New York Giants rookie quarterback looked all out of sorts in their 26-14 defeat to the New Orleans Saints on the road.
Despite having got off to a hot start, becoming the first Giants quarterback since Eli Manning to throw an opening drive touchdown in back-to-back games, the offense folded just as quickly as it had accelerated to begin the contest.
Having jumped out to a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter after Dart found tight end Theo Johnson in the endzone on two occasions, under-pressure Spencer Rattler rallied his troops and sought to get a handle on the game before it got out of sight.
Dart less than impressed by his teammate
With the wheels beginning to fall off at quite the rate for the G-Men, the former Ole Miss star quarterback – who took over from the benched veteran Russell Wilson in Week 4 – was desperately trying to ignite his offense.
In the second quarter, as Dart was scrambling down the middle of the field for the necessary yardage for a first down, he took a hard hit from Saints linebacker Pete Werner.
Wide receiver Jaylin Hyatt was in the vicinity and appeared to watch his teammate scramble. When getting up from the hit, the rookie signal caller was left looking furious over the 24-year-old not coming over to even attempt to block for him.
Big Blue wouldn’t score in the game again.
Helped by five total turnovers, three of which were lost fumbles, New Orleans went on to score 23 unanswered points to get their first win of the season, giving Rattler, who went 20-of-30 for 225 passing yards and a touchdown, his first career NFL win.
After the game, Dart placed the responsibility for the team’s loss on his own shoulders, insisting: “This one is on me… I’m the leader of the offense, I don’t take any excuse for age or being a rookie, there’s a responsibility when you’re quarterback to go win games, that’s just the standard I hold myself to.”
Saints’ brutal dig at Giants rookie
The opposition couldn’t help but fire shots his way with the Saints social media team quick to troll him, captioning their victory post on X (formerly Twitter) with: “DARTED TO THE W.”
This is particularly poignant as the Saints reportedly showed strong interest in Dart entering the 2025 NFL Draft, hosting him for multiple pre-draft visits.
Dart (R) and TE Theo Johnson (L) got off to a hot start, with the pair combining for two touchdowns in the first halfGetty Rattler would rally his team back to score 23 unanswered points to give New Orleans the victoryGettyBut the Saints, who were in dire need of a quarterback and possessed the ninth overall pick in the draft, ultimately chose to pass on him, using that selection on Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., before taking quarterback Tyler Shough out of Louisville 40th overall.
Prior to Sunday’s match-up, Dart spoke to ESPN about being snubbed by New Orleans.
“There is always a chip on your shoulder any time something like that happens,” Dart said, via Jordan Raanan of ESPN. “But yeah, I’m just going to go out there and play as hard as I can.
“I felt like my visit with them went good. You kind of have thoughts in your head about what options are realistic, and I felt that was a place that could’ve panned out. But things didn’t work out that way.”
It was not an impressive showing in Dart’s revenge game, with the rookie completing 26-of-40 for 202 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Football fans, of course, couldn’t wait to take to social media to troll Dart themselves with one fan posting to X: “I’m crying man, Jaxson Dart the worst QB of all time.”
The Saints were reportedly interested in drafting Dart, but opted to snub him in favor of an OTGetty Daniel Jones’ NFL career has been revived since joining the Colts from the GiantsGetty“Russell Wilson on the sideline doing voodoo,” a second fan posted.
“Impressive loss by the Giants to Spencer Rattler and the 0-4 Saints. Jaxson Dart looked like Daniel Jones, throwing two picks and losing a fumble,” a third wrote.
Whilst the Giants’ version of Daniel Jones was known for picks and losing fumbles, Danny Dimes has become Indiana Jones since joining the Indianapolis Colts in the off-season.
In the Colts’ Week 5 clash against the Las Vegas Raiders in which they won 40-6, the 28-year-old quarterback completed 20-of-29 passes for 212 passing yards and two touchdowns through three quarters.
Jones looks far removed from the player he was in the Big Apple, having led the Colts to a 4-1 record, throwing 1,290 yards for six touchdowns to just two interceptions.
Meanwhile Dart, Brian Daboll and Co. fall to 1-4, and sit last in the NFC East.
