A Training Camp Vibe Shift, A More Intense Billy Donovan, Center Depth, and Other Bulls Bullets

Something feels different about the Chicago Bulls.

Let me preface what I’m about to say with this: I don’t expect the win-loss column to look a whole lot different this season. There is a very good chance the Chicago Bulls are headed for their fourth-straight Play-In Tournament, especially when we consider the opportunities that have opened up in the Eastern Conference due to injury. With that said, is it fair to say that making the Play-In this year would feel slightly different than doing so in the previous few years? I think so! Look, I’m not saying anyone should be over the moon about that outcome. If you’re out on this franchise until they show signs of being a true playoff threat, I can’t blame you. But unlike when an All-Star trio of LaVine, DeRozan, and Vucevic were underachieving their way to the postseason, this young group reaching that point would feel a little more valuable. Indeed, the Bulls essentially secured a Play-In spot last season because of LaVine and Vucevic carrying them to a borderline .500 record for half the season. We can agree there is a difference between two veterans doing that and players in their early 20s, right? Whereas that felt like a ceiling for the veteran-laden Bulls, it would feel more like a good starting point or the floor for this version of the roster. The Bulls released their first All-Access video of the year, and I think it’s one of the best in quite some time. With plans to build on last season’s uptempo attack and establish a more respectable defensive identity, the first week of training camp looks INTENSE. Not only do we get tons of clips of players hustling in transition and playing at game speed, but we get to see Billy Donovan in a whole new light. Again, perhaps this version of Donovan is nothing new for the players, but I don’t think Bulls fans have seen this side of him before. The part that really jumps off the screen is when Donovan can be heard calling out his squad on the sideline: “Guys, we have to be a whole lot better right now. Can you do it when you’re fatigued? I’m sorry you’re sore. Get f***ing over it right now. Let’s do sh*t the right way.” I mean … how freakin’ awesome is that? I knew this fiercer side of Donovan existed, particularly during his Florida days. However, I’m not sure if he’s ever taken this exact approach at the NBA level. Perhaps he looked at this younger roster and knew he had to brush off his old college coaching mentality. Regardless, I absolutely loved how he came off in this episode. I know a lot of folks were quick to criticize the extension, but let’s not pretend a good coach is easy to come by. Donovan can still prove to be the right guy for the job. Bulls Training Camp: You Got to Love This Billy Donovan Quote About Buying in on Defense The preseason will give us a much better idea of whether or not Donovan’s high-intensity practices are paying off. Nevertheless, there is no question that the team is embracing a more physical mindset early on. My second favorite part of the episode came near the end, where we see them do a football-like charge drill. Every player gets decked with a pad before his teammates let out a big celebration. Seriously, if you have 8 free minutes on this Sunday, spend it watching All-Access. It’ll get you shockingly pumped for the return of Bulls basketball. Regarding the Bulls’ likely having the same record despite the better vibes, Bleacher Report predicted their final tally for every NBA team. They have the Bulls at 38-44, which would give them one fewer win than the previous two seasons. All things considered, I think that’s a spot-on prediction. Could they end up creeping even higher? Perhaps, especially if Buzelis takes the leap many are hoping for. However, I would hammer their current over of 32.5. DraftKings is even giving you +100 odds for that! Donovan-led teams have only finished below that threshold once since joining the franchise, and this was during his first year in 2020-21, when the team overhauled the roster in the middle of the year. The only thing I disagree with in B/R’s latest on the Bulls is this comment: “Late-career leaps like that are almost never sustainable, and the Bulls have absolutely nothing behind Vučević on the center depth chart.” First of all, the late leap they’re referring to is Vucevic’s career-best true shooting percentage last season. Do I think he’ll post an identical number? Not necessarily, but I do think he can put together another solid season, especially with a true point guard like Josh Giddey there to help him. However, the bigger point I disagree with is the claim that there is “nothing” behind Vucevic. Zach Collins and Jalen Smith both played extremely well last season. Is either destined to be the team’s future starting big man? Probably not, but they each offer something different and give the Bulls a deeper center rotation that they’ve had in years. I’m actually pretty high on what both can do in this system this season. You know what’s always a great sign for a young player? When you’re teammates gush about you on the regular.

With the season only days away, the Blackhawks have reportedly signed a defenseman. Game 1 in Milwaukee came with A LOT of mistakes for the Cubs. Can they bounce back?
