Strictly’s ‘chaperones are becoming a nightmare’ as they watch over all training and rehearsals

FOLLOWING allegations made against former professional dancers Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima, Strictly Come Dancing bosses drafted In chaperones to keep an eye on training sessions.

They were included as part of the BBC’s new duty of care measures, but it’s now been reported that some of this year’s celebrities are allegedly not happy as the chaperones are getting in the way of their training.

A source told The Mail on Sunday: “The chaperones have started to become a bit of a nightmare. It’s making training harder and less enjoyable because there are lots of stops and starts.

“Nobody wants a repeat of Graziano kicking Zara McDermott but some of the situations are a bit over the top.

“The chaperones are logging things that really don’t need to be. It’s like it has gone from one extreme to the other.

“Some celebrities just want to crack on, get on with it and learn to dance. It has all got a bit too much. Just because there were some unfortunate incidents, it doesn’t mean everyone should have to put up with it.”

A second source explained to the publication that “things are just not the same anymore”, adding: “There is a lot more walking on eggshells.

“The chances of the Strictly curse [where contestants fall for each other despite being in a relationship with somebody else] have also lessened because there is a chaperone hanging around.

“The training sessions are no longer the intimate surroundings they were, which is a shame.”

However, a BBC spokesman told The Sun: “Training Room Researchers, referred to by some press as ‘chaperones’, would not interrupt rehearsals in the way this story suggests.

“Their job is to observe and log activity.”

It was first reported in September last year that the BBC had drafted in chaperones ahead of 2024’s series.

Bosses at the BBC instructed the “training room researchers” to phone senior staff immediately if there was misconduct involving a pro dancer and celebrity partner.

It comes after actress Amanda Abbington complained Giovanni was bullying her and acting inappropriately during training sessions in 2023.

Another pro dancer, Graziano, was axed from the show amid claims he hit, kicked and spat at former Made in Chelsea star Zara McDermott, 27 during rehearsals.

Chaperones are tasked with keeping a log in the training room for eight hours a day across a four-day week.

The Sun revealed at the time that 15 monitoring staff had been recruited and a source said: “They’ve been told to log positive moments in rehearsals as well as anything that could be called into question.
