Bangladesh cricket has slid into yet another crisis by a boardroom explosion. The players are now threatening to shut the game down entirely. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Thursday issued a show cause notice to its director and finance committee chairman, M Nazmul Islam, over what it described as “objectionable public comments” made against the country’s cricketers.
The move came only hours before scheduled Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) fixtures, with the players’ body, the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), standing firm on its call for a nationwide boycott unless Nazmul resigns.
As per ESPNcricinfo, all four first-division Dhaka Cricket League matches slated for Thursday morning failed to start, while players from Chattogram Royals and Noakhali Express refused to take the field for the opening BPL match of the day. With the toss scheduled for 12:30 pm local time, CWAB leaders are expected to hold a press conference shortly after to formally present their demands, with Nazmul’s resignation topping the list.
What has BCB said?
In its statement, the BCB said, “The board has already initiated formal disciplinary proceedings against the board member concerned. A show cause letter has been issued, and the individual has been instructed to submit a written response within 48 hours. The matter will be dealt with through due process and appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the proceedings.“
However, behind the scenes, some board directors reportedly approached CWAB president Mohammad Mithun late Wednesday night with an offer to remove Nazmul from his position as finance committee chairman. Mithun made it clear that this would not satisfy the players.
The flashpoint was Nazmul’s explosive remarks earlier in the day, when he suggested national cricketers should be asked to return the “crores and crores of taka” spent on them by the board and questioned their value. Mithun responded saying,“The remark made by the BCB director has hurt the cricket fraternity greatly and it’s not acceptable. We demand his resignation. If he doesn’t resign before tomorrow’s match, we will announce a boycott of all cricket.“
Team captains Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mahedi Hasan and Mithun, along with Noakhali coach Khaled Mahmud, have already pledged support for the protest. The situation is even more volatile because of Bangladesh’s standoff over playing in India at the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. Nazmul’s comments came while addressing the potential financial impact if Bangladesh were to skip the tournament entirely, where he claimed the board would suffer nothing and the players deserved no compensation. Mind you, several players are expected to lose sponsorship money due to the India-Bangladesh conflict.
