San Diego FC overcame a late push by the Houston Dynamo on Saturday to win 4-2 and become the best regular season expansion team in MLS history.
Anders Dreyer scored two goals and Amahl Pellegrino added a goal and an assist, as SDFC (18-9-6, 60 points), the leader in the Western Conference, took a three-point lead over second-place Vancouver. The club also extended its unbeaten streak on the road to nine games.
Felipe Andrade scored on a sliding first-touch finish — off a low volley played into the area by Ondřej Lingr — to give Houston a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.

Luca de la Torre came on in the 84th minute and scored in the 85th to give San Diego a 2-1 lead, but it was short-lived.
Sergio Santos — who was acquired by Houston off waivers from Cincinnati and was making his second appearance off the bench for the Dynamo – responded in the 87th to make it 2-2.
But Dreyer soon rolled a short pass to Pellegrino, who tapped it back to Dreyer for a first-touch finish from just outside the 6-yard box. That gave San Diego the lead for good in the 89th minute.
Pellegrino capped the scoring in the 13th minute of stoppage time with a left-footed shot following an assist from Jeppe Tverskov. It was Pellegrino’s first SDFC goal.
“You know, the first half, I thought we were okay, also, like they weren’t creating big chances, we were just off a little bit … but I think from the get-go in the second half, it was clear that the group knew that we were going to turn this one around,” said head coach Mikey Varas.

— San Diego FC (@sandiegofc) October 5, 2025Houston (9-15-9) was eliminated from playoff contention with the loss. But the victory gave SDFC a special place in the MLS record books.
San Diego set new MLS expansion team records for both most wins (18) and most points (60) in a single season. Los Angeles FC had held the points mark with 57 in 2018, while St. Louis City posted 17 wins in 2023.
“You have to celebrate that, man. You have to celebrate that. 60 points,” Varas said. “Nobody can take that away from us, that’s written down right now until somebody else breaks it.”
SDFC will watch Sunday as second-place Vancouver plays San Jose. San Diego then travels to Providence Park Oct. 18 to face the Portland Timbers and close out its inaugural regular season.
