Blackhawks 0, Blues 4 — Preseason Takeaways

The Blues brought what appeared to be a mostly NHL roster — maybe their season opening group? — to the United Center to face a bunch of IceHogs and guys in roster battles for the Blackhawks. On paper, this one felt like it was pretty stacked in the Blues’ favor.

But sometimes young guys getting some run at the United Center for the first time gives them a little extra giddyup. And the younger players are adapting to some of the new systems quicker in some ways because they haven’t spent multiple years with other NHL coach(es). That’s why they play the games, Blackhawks fans.

The young Hawks did a nice job to start but, eventually, the team with more NHL players took over.

    First Period: 0-0

Just for fun, the Blackhawks took a penalty early. They killed it successfully, which was a nice change of pace after last night’s second period. They killed a second penalty later in the period, which was neat. I thought Landon Slaggert, Ryan Greene and Nolan Allan had a good first period. The Blackhawks only won 5 of 18 faceoffs in the first period; Greene won 4 of 10. The official shots on goal showed a 9-7 advantage for the Blues. The Blackhawks had a 10-7 advantage in scoring chances.

    Second Period: 3-0 Blues

Yes, the Blackhawks skated a mostly different roster on Saturday night than they did on Friday night. But with many players in the game(s) being drafted/signed by Kyle Davidson’s front office, the attributes they talk about are something to watch. On both Friday and Saturday night, the overall team speed of the Blackhawks was a problem for a division opponent. The lineup on Saturday night didn’t have a lot of offensive flash but they flipped the ice pretty quickly. Four minutes into the second period, Aleksanteri Kaskimaki (you better believe I cut & pasted that name) threw a simple shot on net that somehow got into and thru Arvid Söderblom to end the shutout bid. Not a good goal to give up in a close game. The game didn’t stay close, though… The first goal wasn’t a good one. I’m not sure Söderblom had much of a chance on the second. Milan Lucic doubled the lead at 13:13 on a shot that was thru a really good screen. Yup, Lucic is in camp with the Blues on a PTO still. Robert Thomas scored the Blues’ third goal of the period. The Hawks hung around in the first. They looked like overwhelmed IceHogs for a lot of the second period. Shots on goal were 20-8 in favor of the Blues after two periods. The Blackhawks won 15 of 35 faceoffs in the opening 40 minutes. Greene won 7 of 14 thru two. A positive: the Blackhawks stayed out of the penalty box in the second. So we’ve got that going for us… which is nice.

    Third Period: 4-0 Blues

The Blackhawks took a penalty early in the third period and Otto Stenberg scored to make the lead four. The rest of the third period was played. I promise it was. I was there.
