It’s officially fall and pumpkins once again light up the night at Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge. Carved runs through the 30th, nightly from 6–10 pm at the gardens.
Carved is a family-friendly attraction that takes visitors on a tour of the garden transformed into a magical Halloween experience. Along the trails, there are scary pumpkin patches, ghosts and light shows all designed for fun chills. And speaking of chills, bring a sweater since the gardens can get cool after dark in the fall. This year, new work has been added by Chainsaw Jenna: a wood-carved ghost family will join her wood spirit family.
The stars of the show are always the custom carved Big Mac pumpkins featured in the Rose Garden. Twelve artists work throughout October to keep fresh carved art on display. According to carver Author Romeo, it takes about three hours to complete a pumpkin. Once the themes for the pumpkins are complete, the carvers get to work creating what Romeo calls “light etching” on the surface of the pumpkins. Each pumpkin only lasts about 3-5 days.
“During the run of the show, we will go through about 130 Big Mac pumpkins. … Right now I’m working on a Wednesday pumpkin for next week, and then, later on in the month, I’ll do the whole family.”
Visitors can watch the artists at work, as well as take a break from the trial with refreshments in the Rose Pavilion at the gardens. A new addition to Descanso Gardens is the Farmhouse Restaurant that will be open during Carved. The new farm-to-table restaurant offers a relaxed yet refined dining experience. Chef Rich Mead highlights local, sustainably sourced ingredients in harmony with nature.
