ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Parkinson’s Foundation is hosting its annual Moving Day Walk on Saturday to raise money for research and support services. The event aims to help the 90,000 Americans who will be diagnosed with Parkinson’s by the end of the year.
Parkinson’s disease affects many well-known figures like Michael J. Fox, Muhammad Ali, Brett Favre and Robert Mueller. It also impacts countless families across the Greater Rochester area, including my own. My dad has Parkinson’s and my husband is his primary caregiver.
“The care partner, the family member, everybody is living with this, right? It’s part of your whole environment,” said Nancy Nealon, Education and Outreach Director for the Northeast Region of the Parkinson’s Foundation.
The Moving Day event encourages participants to keep moving, as exercise has been scientifically proven to slow the progression of the disease and help manage symptoms.
“Without a doubt, it has been scientifically proven, exercise helps to slow the progression of this disease and helps people to manage the symptoms,” Nealon said.
Parkinson’s is caused by a significant drop in dopamine production in the brain. While many patients have the tell-tale tremor, the disease can cause a host of symptoms from balance problems to constipation to sleep disturbances. No two people experience Parkinson’s the same way.
“You know you kind of get the chills when you see all these wonderful people who come every year to support their loved one with Parkinson’s and in effect they are helping to move the Parkinson’s Foundation’s mission forward,” Nealon said.
That mission includes funding research and support services. They encourage families to reach out for help with resources at 1-800-4PD-INFO (473-4636). You can also contact the helpline by clicking here.
The event will be held Saturday morning at MCC’s Henrietta Road campus. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m. You can register onsite or donate online at the Parkinson’s Foundation website.
