I Love This Ben Johnson Quote About Trick Plays

Ben Johnson’s name has been synonymous with trick plays in recent years.

And with good reason.

In addition to running a well-oiled machine when he was the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson would throw opposing defenses for a loop with some grand trickery. Balancing a gritty run game while sprinkling in a bit of finesse with the pass game is one thing. But it is the trick plays, misdirection stuff that takes Johnson’s offense to another level.

Of course, not all of the trick plays are going to work as planned. But more importantly, the Bears have a head coach who understands that not every piece of art is worthy of hanging in the Louvre. Hence, I love this quote from Johnson (h/t Pro Football Talk) in response to the failed Stumblebum sequel that fell flat against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 4:

“We have a group of guys who come up with plays, and we felt like that could take advantage of something we saw. We were really in two-down territory in my mind at that point anyway, I so I knew we were going to go for an explosive play on that one, and if we didn’t get it we were going to go for it on the next one. It happens sometimes. That’s the cost of doing business. Some of them hit, some of them don’t.”

I am enjoying Ben Johnson’s explanations when he has been asked questions this year. He is clear, concise, and forthcoming. It is a breath of fresh air when compared to previous coaching regimes that acted as if their play calls and decisions were not to be questioned. I do not know how long this will last, but I hope it does not go away anytime soon.

What to make of Ben Johnson’s quote about trick plays

Full disclosure: I did not expect a ton of tomfoolery early because Johnson laid down the ground rules almost immediately upon arrival.

“None of it can be done unless the fundamentals are hammered home,” Johnson said of running trick plays when he was introduced as the Bears’ new head coach back in January.

With that being said, I do not think it is a coincidence that we have seen the first-year Bears head coach expand his playbook in recent weeks. Based on what Johnson said in his introductory press conference and the uptick in gadget plays, I am taking this as a sign that the team is starting to get the fundamentals down. Otherwise, Johnson wouldn’t be going deep in his playbook. Trick plays are earned and are not to be thrown out willy-nilly.

A SIX-PACK OF CHICAGO BEARS BYE WEEK THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

My biggest takeaway from the coaching side of things through four weeks is that Ben Johnson calls plays with reason and purpose. That goes for the staples, as well as the trick plays. I dig it because it is a philosophy that my folks had with me growing up. You earned fun treats when you were doing good things. Moving forward, if the Bears’ offense continues to make strides, more trick plays will come. Hopefully, they will fare better than Stumblebum 2.0.
