The Syrian Ministry of Justice denied on Thursday, October 2, rumors circulating on social media that death sentences had been issued against several former Assad-era officials.
According to the claims, the alleged verdicts targeted former Grand Mufti of Syria Ahmed Badr al-Din Hassoun, former Air Force Intelligence chief Ibrahim Huwija, former Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar, and former Political Security branch chief in Daraa Atef Najib.
In a statement to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the Ministry’s media office said the named individuals remain under investigation and trial, and no court ruling has been issued against them to date.
The ministry stressed that the information being circulated lacked any official source and urged accuracy in reporting on judicial matters, underscoring reliance on statements issued by official bodies.
The Ministry of Justice had earlier announced the start of receiving case files of detainees accused of committing crimes and violations against the Syrian people, in coordination with the Interior Ministry, and that public prosecution proceedings had been initiated against them.
In a statement issued last July, the ministry said it had worked to establish an institutional framework suitable for judicial reform and had taken decisive steps to remove judges involved in human rights violations.
In a separate statement, the ministry explained that after the Interior Ministry referred several case files of those accused of violations, the Public Prosecutor began reviewing the reports and documents, upon which criminal proceedings were initiated against:
Atef Najib (born in Jableh, 1960)
Ahmed Badr al-Din Hassoun (born in Aleppo, 1949)
Mohammed al-Shaar (born in al-Haffa, 1950)
Ibrahim Huwija (born in Jableh, 1940)
The Public Prosecutor confirmed their referral to the investigating judge to begin legal proceedings.
The ministry also called on human rights and humanitarian organizations to provide any files or documents that could help uncover the truth, reiterating its commitment to ensuring justice and holding those responsible for violations accountable.
Abdul Baset Abdul Latif, head of the National Commission for Transitional Justice, said that referring some perpetrators of violations to the judiciary was decided in consultation between the Justice Minister, the Public Prosecutor, and the Commission. He explained that the body is still being formed, with committees, including one for accountability, that will handle cases of serious violations.
Pledge to Hold Perpetrators Accountable
Justice Minister Mazhar Louis previously stated that the pace of measures was accelerating, with seriousness and professionalism, within the relevant bodies toward holding accountable those whose hands were stained with the blood of Syrians, in line with established legal procedures.
On June 21, following the arrest of Wasim al-Assad, one of the most prominent drug traffickers implicated in multiple crimes during the former regime, Louis affirmed that “justice will take its course against anyone whose hands are stained with the blood of innocent Syrians, and our young state institutions are steadily moving forward on this path.”
The Justice Minister pledged that criminals would face fair and transparent trials, acknowledging the scale of suffering endured by the Syrian people, and described the pursuit of justice as a “sacred duty.”
