As the US government faced up to the serious matter of shutting down because of a partisan confrontation in Congress, Trump diverted attention by posting an AI video on Truth Social depicting one of the chief negotiators, Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic Leader, as a comic book Mexican wearing a sombrero and handle-bar moustache.
The message was clear. Mexicans are fair game and racism is a laughing matter.
The video was shown on a loop in the White House Press briefing room yesterday and JD Vance brushed aside the accusations of racism. “Oh, I think it’s funny, the President is joking and we’re having a good time”, he told reporters. Before issuing a “solemn promise”, mafioso style, to Jeffries “if you help us re-open the government, the sombrero memes will stop”.
The just-joking excuse – advancing an extreme idea but passing it off as a joke or random thought – is a familiar technique of demagogues and satirists and is just yet another example of how America’s morality is decaying under Vance and Trump.
As the Harvard professor of psychology Steven Pinker told me in an interview this week, Trump has realised that it is possible to get away with breaking “the norms”, the rules of behaviour, usually regarded as inviolable by democratic leaders across the political spectrum.
Trump boasts outrageously. He mocks disabled people. He has reportedly called those who died for their country “losers”, though the President and his allies denied making the remarks. He treats international allies as vassals to be extorted for tribute. He and his family are exploiting the presidency to enrich themselves with billions of dollars. He is the first convicted felon to grace the Oval Office. And he is getting away with it.
He and his Maga henchmen are even prepared to play with the live wire of racism. Everything they say and do broadcasts their view that white men should be in charge of the United States.
For sure, Trump has his supporters among black, Asian and Latino Americans. But billionaires outnumber ethnic minorities many times over in his senior government appointments.
Vance’s own wife, Usha, is the daughter of Indian immigrant parents. Yet earlier this year he and Elon Musk supported the re-instatement of a sacked DOGE agent, Marko Elez who had advocated “normalize India hate” on social media, adding “Indian-Americans no matter how you succeed you will always be a second-class citizen”.
Trump has ordered corporations to abandon DEI policies, or else. Diversity, equity and inclusion aimed to help minorities share fairly in American life. Before sending in the National Guard, based on bogus claims about soaring crime, Trump demanded that the black female Mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser, rename “Black Lives Matter Plaza” as “Liberty Plaza”. The President’s actual and planned military interventions are targeted at cities with significant minority populations, including in the local administrations.
The late Charlie Kirk was mourned by the President and Vice President at a five-hour funeral event after he was killed. Kirk flirted with the idea that the Civil Rights Act had been a mistake. He also suggested that black airline pilots may not be a capable as others.
Trump’s second term has so far been extreme action spearheaded by ICE troopers against illegal, and some legal, migration, mainly from Mexico and other Latinos from Central and South America.
Cracking and laughing off apparently casual memes about Mexicans play their part, shattering the norm of what used to be unacceptable. Along with the smiles prejudice and unprecedented draconian policies are being legitimised.
Trump confessed to the Kirk funeral that he cannot help but hate his enemies. His jokes degrade minorities to second-class citizenship, if they are viewed as citizens at all.
Public discourse in America is being reduced to the grunts of an online troll. Americans are being joked into agreeing that taking action in accordance with with such spiteful words is okay – even funny.
