ROCHESTER, N.Y. – New statistics on domestic violence in Monroe County and Rochester have revealed alarming trends.
According to the Monroe County and Willow Domestic Violence Center, 38,000 domestic dispute calls were made to 911 in 2023, a number officials said is high. Reports of domestic violence in Rochester occurred two and a half times more often than the state average, while Monroe County saw cases at 1.6 times the New York average.
News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin spoke with Tina Schreib, a domestic violence survivor who was nearly killed by her partner last year. Schreib said the numbers are disturbing.
Marsha Augustin: 4521 reports of domestic violence were made in Monroe County in 2023. That number represents individual domestic violence survivors. What is your reaction when you here that?
Tina Schreib: “I mean I’m one of those numbers.
Schreib survived a brutal machete attack by her partner, losing her arm and suffering permanent damage to her left eye. She continues to recover physically, mentally, and emotionally, sharing her story to inspire others to seek help.
“He eviscerated me, he got me with a machete here kind of came around this way to it got me in the head – skull fracture visible, white matter my brain I had scars down the side here- stabbed me in the back I guess 28 times which lacerated my liver,” Schreib said.
With a second chance at life, Schreib aims to advocate for domestic violence survivors and start a support group to help reduce these numbers.
“In person talk and share our stories and share a message and come and have all of our stories to share with women who think there’s no way out,” Schreib said.
The report also highlighted that over 4,700 orders of protection were filed in 2023, but less than a quarter were granted permanently. Schreib believes restraining orders are insufficient and calls for changes in New York’s laws.
“What’s ridiculous is that 4,784 were filed and final orders were 1,073. We definitely need stricter laws more consequences. That would get the numbers down cause only the law can enforce this,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Schreib continues to thrive and defy the odds. “I’ve never felt sorry for myself, I’ll never be a victim, I’m not a victim,” Schreib said.
