When it comes to rooting for Texas football, there is no script, there is no playing a certain character. When he cheers for Texas, including former Longhorns quarterback Major Applewhite, Powell is purely playing himself.
“I’ve been a fan of all Texas athletics my entire life, growing up in Austin. There’s a lot of college football towns, but there’s very few college football cities,” explained Powell, pointing to how large a city Austin is and it not having a professional sports team. “I’ve always lived and breathed Texas Longhorns. When I was a kid, Major Applewhite was one of my favorite quarterbacks. There was just something magical.”
Powell mentioned that he used to work as an usher at Texas football games when he was in high school. Oh yes, the guy who’s now a famous actor is very much legit when it comes to his Texas football fandom roots.
“I think what (head coach Steve Sarkisian) has done with the program is extraordinary,” Powell added.
