Newcastle United picked up their first points of the UEFA Champions League league phase thanks to a 4-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise.
Two penalties via Anthony Gordon plus further goals from Nick Woltemade and Harvey Barnes secured Newcastle’s 10th successive win against Belgian opposition in major European competition.
After an opening matchday defeat at home to Spanish giants Barcelona, the Premier League club needed a positive result to get their 2025-26 UCL campaign up and running.
Eddie Howe’s side opened the scoring on 17 minutes through Woltemade. After a whipped cross from Anthony Elanga was headed clear of the box, Sandro Tonali ran onto the loose ball, and his shot took a helpful deflection off the German striker and past goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.
It was Woltemade’s third goal in four starts for the Magpies and his strike saw him become the fourth player to score on his first Champions League start for Newcastle, after Faustino Asprilla, Stuart Pearce and Miguel Almirón.
More great work from Elanga gave Newcastle the chance to double their lead three minutes before half-time. His trickery saw him weave into the box before being brought down by Fedde Leysen.
Gordon took on the responsibility from the spot and the England international found the bottom corner to score his second goal of the UCL season following his consolation against Barcelona on Matchday 1. The only Newcastle players to previously score in consecutive Champions League appearances were Shola Ameobi and Alan Shearer.
Newcastle were awarded their second penalty of the night, and the second given against Leysen, this time for handball, in the 62nd minute following VAR intervention. Gordon once again stepped up and scored, replicating his first penalty of the night by placing the ball into the bottom right-hand corner with power.
Substitute Barnes added a fourth from a fine counter-attack by Newcastle with 10 minutes left to play, running onto a neat through ball via fellow sub William Osula before finding the back of the net. Their four goals from X shots tonight equal their Premier League goal tally in six games (from 62 shots).
After an impressive victory away in the Netherlands against PSV on MD1, Union Saint-Gilloise had hopes of becoming the first Belgian team to win their first two games in the European Cup/Champions League since RWD Molenbeek in 1975.
It wasn’t meant to be, however, as Newcastle just proved too strong without ever having to really move through the gears to secure all three points.
