When it comes to '80s pop-rock hits, Mr. Mister's "Broken Wings" stands out for its unique, melancholy tone. In the decades since the tune climbed the charts in 1985, countless fans have related to the lyrics, which seem to be about a faltering relationship — but as singer Richard Page revealed in a recently-shared interview, there's more to it than that.
In a clip posted on TikTok, Page reflected on the struggles the band was dealing with at the time the song was written.
"We got into the thing everybody was doing at the time, which is doing tons of drugs, and you know, just partying in the studio," he recalled.

It was like, you know, Freud used it, it's not addictive, and it's a creative person's thing," Page continued.
"Well, that's how we kinda all got into that. But of course, you know, we've seen the damage done. And it really kind of derailed me seriously for a few years. Coming out of that and deciding that wasn't gonna be a part of our lives anymore was really what 'Broken Wings' was about," he explained.
Was 'Broken Wings' inspired by the Beatles?
In a 2010 interview with Smashing Interviews, Page addressed the question of whether the lyrics "Take these broken wings and learn to fly again" were inspired by the classic Beatles song "Blackbird," admitting it was a "mindless unintentional reference" by lyricist John Lang, who co-wrote the hit.
"As a matter of fact, in all honesty, John got that from the Khalil Gibran book called The Broken Wing. He actually went to Khalil Gibran’s estate and asked for permission to use it which made me wonder if that was where Paul McCartney got it, too, but who knows?" Page reflected.
"In any case, the sequence of those words is very close to 'Blackbird' and I was not even aware of it, believe it or not, until it became a hit. Somebody pointed it out to me and my heart sank. I just felt like, 'Oh wow, we shouldn’t have done that.' But it was no big deal because legally it’s not a copyright infringement so it’s all good. Actually I hung out with Paul not too long ago in New York with Ringo [Starr]."
In fact, Page joined Starr's All-Starr Band in 2010 and toured with the group several times — so clearly there was no ill will between the musicians.
