Ty Simpson had a gentle message for his star left tackle on Tuesday afternoon: let’s not go overboard
The Alabama quarterback used Tuesday’s meeting with the media to give Kadyn Proctor a humor-filled rejection of his latest trick-play request. You see, on Saturday night during the massive victory at Georgia, Proctor was part of a weird but wonderful play that you would’ve never suspected from the 6-foot-7, 366-pound behemoth lineman.
With the Crimson Tide leading 17-14 and driving late in the second quarter, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb dialed up a run by Proctor, because really what else would you expect Grubb to call in such a crucial moment? So rather than run a conventional play from the Bulldogs’ 13-yard line on 1st-and-10, Bama went very bold and had Proctor line up out wide near the sidelines. Sure enough, Simpson took the snap and found his new favorite target, who rumbled over multiple defenders to the Georgia 2-yard line.
It was technically called an 11-yard run by Proctor, and on the next play Simpson took matters into his own hands, scoring on a 2-yard run to give the Tide a 24-14 halftime lead. It turned out to be the game-winning score, and Proctor had a major hand in it, so why not ask Simpson if he could throw the ball on the next trick play?
Simpson let his lineman down gracefully and with a touch of comic relief.
