For years, the English Rose in San Carlos, an old-fashioned tea house, was where single mom and executive assistant Angela Pierucci took her two children to celebrate birthdays. Then, in 2012, the shop closed without warning.
The emptiness she felt after learning about its closure turned into a dream to someday open her own tea shop, which stayed in the back of her mind, she says. “It really did start with that little family tradition.”
Then, in January 2023, the name By the Teashore suddenly popped into her mind. She recalls taking the moment of clarity as a sign to move forward with her dream, she says. From there, she trademarked the name and started collecting furniture, decor and tea sets. Then, earlier this year, she found her location: a 1903 Victorian house on Half Moon Bay’s Main Street.
She opened By the Teashore on Sept. 5, around five months after beginning work on the space.

The menu includes a selection of loose-leaf teas, plus three-tiered trays with items like Earl Grey lemon scones, clotted cream and lemon curd. One popular breakfast item is thick custard-baked French toast with vanilla chai spice, topped with Chantilly cream and chopped walnuts, served with mango mousse, figs and bananas. The recipe is a special one — it’s what Pierucci traditionally serves on Christmas morning in her household, she says.

There is also a kids’ menu, plus a la carte options.
The interior is filled with personal touches, like wallpaper from a roll left over from Pierucci’s former home, where she lived prior to Half Moon Bay. She’d imagined sharing its intricate details with future grandkids but, instead, used it on the walls of her new tea shop, where now she’s already seeing other families enjoying it. The decor includes an old-fashioned nickelodeon as well as a bathroom with Art Deco design. And the tea shop has a seasonally open dog-friendly patio.
“If people come in and enjoy looking at things and the food, and feel genuinely appreciated, that’s all I want,” she says.
