Tyrique Stevenson is in his bounce-back era.
And his head coach has taken notice.
Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson spoke glowingly about Tyrique Stevenson on Monday while speaking to the media at Halas Hall after reviewing the game tape from the team’s Week 4 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. I found this commentary to be intriguing:
“I thought this was his best game to date,” Johnson said, via the Bears’ official website. “I don’t know if there’s any light switch that came on or anything like that. I feel like I see the same approach that I have seen all year long from him over the last few weeks.
“Certainly, I think the confidence level is rising. He knows what he is capable of as a player. The coaching staff hasn’t kept that a secret. He’s very capable as a coverage defender. I think he can be a complete corner in this league: man, zone, come up and tackle in the run game when called upon. [It] really just seems like he is gaining that confidence every single week right now and becoming the player he is capable of.”
Tyrique Stevenson has been at his best the last two games. In Week 3 against the Dallas Cowboys, Stevenson had a game-changing takeaway early in what turned out to be a blowout win for Chicago’s football team. Stevenson followed that performance by coming up with 4 solo tackles, 2 passes defended, and an interception in the Week 4 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. All of that is wonderful. But what I love most is how the Bears’ head coach speaks about the cornerback’s rising confidence and what he thinks about his future. It definitely has my attention.

For what it’s worth, the advanced analytics seem to be happy with how Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson is performing through four games. Pro Football Focus has Stevenson with a 75.4 overall grade, which is the 15th best among NFL cornerbacks. Stevenson’s run defense grade (90.0) from PFF is the third-best among cornerbacks, and it is bolstering his overall grade. However, that does not mean that Stevenson is slacking in coverage.
Tyrique Stevenson’s coverage grade (69.8) ranks 26th among the 102 cornerbacks who have played enough snaps to qualify. Checking in among the top third of cornerbacks puts him in good company. That coverage grade ranks better than standouts such as Devon Witherspoon (68.2), Darius Slay (67.0), Trevon Diggs (65.8), and Derek Stingley Jr. (62.9). This isn’t to say that Stevenson is better than those guys right now. Instead, all I’m saying is that Tyrique is playing well when compared to some of his contemporaries. It certainly beats the alternative.
I thought last year’s coaching staff handled the aftermath of the Fail Mary poorly, so it wasn’t much of a surprise to see Tyrique Stevenson struggle down the stretch last year. But a new coaching staff brought a clean slate for Stevenson in 2025. And while the first few games were rough, the University of Miami product appears to be hitting his stride under the tutelage of Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen and Defensive Backs Coach Al Harris. Stevenson still has a lot of work to do before he gains the confidence of all Bears fans. However, there is no denying that his arrow is pointing up right now.
