Ben Johnson Shares a Brutally Honest Assessment of the Bears Offense at the Bye

Ben Johnson speaks with a blunt tone that it can cut one of two ways.

In some instances, it can come off as grating, and it leads to awkward interactions with sideline reporters. But in others, it can be refreshing — like it was when the head coach’s short fuse went off when discussing something that happened in Week 1 while his focus is on the team’s upcoming game.

I’ll let you be the judge of how to feel about what the Chicago Bears head coach had to say about his offense after four games, Kudos to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin for the transcription:

“I don’t feel like everybody on offense yet is pulling their weight, and that’s myself included. There’s a number of things from yesterday’s game that I have to do a better job of. There’s a couple calls I was getting in late. There’s a couple things that the coaching staff, myself, we could have coached up better to give us a better chance there.

“When you look at it as a whole, it was just a mess, man. I’m just not proud of what we put on tape. I think it’s a reflection of myself. I always take it personally. I saw us getting better the first three weeks in a lot of ways on offense and then this was just a little bit of a step back for us.”

That is as honest as it gets from a coach. I find it refreshing. At a minimum, I like it more when Ben Johnson shares blunt and brutally honest takes about the state of his team’s offense than I did when former Bears coach Matt Eberflus was gushing about how well the team practiced and that everything was fine.

How would you grade Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears offense?

A look at where the Chicago Bears offense ranks in the first four games of the Ben Johnson era:

POINTS: 25.3 per game (12th of 32 teams) TOTAL YARDS: 328.0 per game (19th) PASSING YARDS: 225.8 per game (11th) RUSHING YARDS: 102.3 per game (24th) THIRD-DOWN CONVERSION %: 45.5% (4th) RED-ZONE TD%: 63.6% (15th) QB SACKED%: 5.0% (10th) Sep 21, 2025; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson talks with quarterback Caleb Williams (18) against the Dallas Cowboys during the second half at Soldier Field. On the one hand, the sky isn’t falling at Halas Hall. Some of the numbers above are encouraging. The most notable ones that stand out to me are the QB sack percentage, third-down conversion rate, and red-zone touchdown percentage. Those numbers ranking in the top half of the league so far give me hope for this team when it comes out of the bye in Week 6. No, it isn’t the instant gratification a lot of folks were looking for from the Ben Johnson scheme. However, these are notable improvements.

But on the other hand, the ground game numbers are a mess. In addition to ranking 24th in rushing yards, the Bears also rank 25th in yards per rush (3.8 yards). Watching Chicago’s rushing attack with the running back tandem of D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai has not been fun in any capacity. Hopefully, the powers that be at Halas Hall will see the data and work vigorously to make whatever changes they can during the bye. Otherwise, the downtime will be nothing more than a waste of time. And I do not think Ben Johnson is a time-waster.

I spent a chunk of the offseason thinking about the Bears’ Week 5 bye. An early-season bye isn’t my favorite. However, it isn’t the worst thing when you consider the fluidity of Chicago’s situation.

The way I see it, an early bye allows Ben Johnson and his coaching staff to be aggressive in making changes now instead of waiting to see how things shake out after more dust settles. In a year where this team has a later bye week, I’d preach patience in making changes. But because the early bye provides an opportunity to hit the reset button in certain areas, I feel as if it would behoove this coaching staff to make the most of the opportunity that has presented itself.
