Not to be lost in the madness of a wild Week 4 win against the Las Vegas Raiders is the fact that Rome Odunze continues to do great things for the Chicago Bears.
The Bears are entering the bye week riding a wave of good vibes.
Caleb Williams is showing that he can get it done in the clutch. Josh Blackwell is serving up reminders of how important special teams excellence can be. Ben Johnson has shown us what it looks like when culture change isn’t just a buzzword that a coach throws out. But I can’t get past the fact that second-year wide receiver Rome Odunze is doing things that haven’t been done since Walter Payton was terrorizing opposing defenses.
I stumbled across this factoid on Sunday, and knew that I needed to share it with the world:

Chicago Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze has scored a touchdown in each of the team’s four games this season. And according to the research by the NFL on FOX’s research staff, the last Bears player to pull off that feat in the team’s first four games (or more) was Walter Payton in 1986. Sweetness scored in each of Chicago’s first six games of the 1986 season before the Minnesota Vikings put a stop to the streak in Week 7. Payton amassed seven touchdowns (5 rushing, 2 receiving) in those six games. It’s impressive stuff, which makes what Odunze is doing pretty neat.
Through four games, Rome Odunze has 20 receptions, 296 receiving yards, and 5 touchdowns. That puts him at this 17-game pace:
85 receptions (149 targets) 1,258 receiving yards (14.8 yards per reception) 21 touchdownsThis is a small sample, but that won’t stop me from sharing something fun.

These are the numbers to this point:
20/35 (57.1%) 5 touchdowns, 1 interception 113.9 passer ratingWatching Caleb Williams’ on-the-field relationship with Rome Odunze grow in real time has been a highlight of the early going. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Chicago’s football team. But Williams and Odunze teaming up to make big plays happen has helped the Bears avoid a disastrous start to carry the team to a .500 record going into the bye week. If the team makes some obvious fixes in the 14 days between games, we could continue to see that partnership bloom.

There are so many reasons I am looking forward to the Bears’ trip out east to face the Washington Commanders in Week 6 on Monday Night Football. The revenge factor will be off the charts for a team looking to avenge its most painful loss of the 2024 season. But beyond that, I look forward to the nation getting a glimpse of the Rome Odunze-Caleb Williams tandem. That will certainly be must-see TV for football fans. And if Odunze can tie Sweetness with touchdowns in the first six games of the year, it will give us something else to write about.
