When the Chicago Bears got the ball back with 6:45 to play, trailing the Las Vegas Raiders 24-19, in a contest where there were plenty of reasons to believe otherwise, I felt a sense of calm. Caleb Williams was going to drive them down the field and score. I honestly did not doubt that.
Neither did his head coach, Ben Johnson, who told Williams at the two-minute warning, “This is what you’re built for.”
Williams did not let his head coach down, authoring a drive that ended with D’Andre Swift bouncing outside for a go-ahead and eventual game-winning touchdown.
“In that moment, Ben came over to me right before, and he goes, ‘These are times that you’re made for.’ So, he provided belief and confidence that he has in me,” Williams said after the game at Allegiant Stadium. “And then from there, I went to the huddle and looked everybody in the eyes: ‘This is the moment. This is where we go win the game.’”

Raiders star Maxx Crosby was a menace on Sunday. Williams called Crosby the best player he’d ever played against after the game, but even Crosby couldn’t stop Williams from doing his job when it mattered most.
Williams used a 13-yard scramble on that final drive to overcome a Cole Kmet false start penalty that could have tanked the drive like we’d seen multiple times in that game. He used a 17-yard completion to Rome Odunze to counter a negative rushing attempt by D’Andre Swift after that, and again used his legs to pick up six yards to take the Bears inside the Vegas 10-yard line with under two minutes to play, setting up Swift’s 5-yard touchdown.
Whatever the Raiders — and his own teammates in multiple instances — threw at Williams on Sunday, he found a way to overcome them.
“These are the moments that he thrives in the most,” Johnson said of his quarterback after the game. “I think that’s really been the story of his life. … And I know he came through for us in a big way.”
Williams’ late-game heroics were on display on Sunday, but it’s not the first time we’ve seen that intangible in action.

Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-Imagn ImagesIn last season’s finale in Green Bay, Williams completed 15-yard and 18-yard passes to Odunze and DJ Moore to set up a game-winning field goal by Cairo Santos. Williams also drove the Bears into scoring position for a potential game-winning field goal for Santos when the two teams first met in November last year. That particular attempt was blocked, but it shouldn’t take away from what Caleb Williams accomplished.
He authored a would-be game-winning drive last season against the Washington Commanders that was wiped away by the Fail Mary. He also put together a touchdown drive (with a successful two-point conversion) followed by a drive that set up a game-tying field goal for Santos to force overtime against the Vikings weeks before the Green Bay game-winning drive, before Chicago lost in overtime.
Last season, half of Williams’ 20 touchdown passes came in the fourth quarter, and the rookie threw for 1,108 yards, a 95.3 passer rating, and logged 14 plays of more than 20 yards during the final frame.
This season, he’s picked up where he left off.
“I think those moments that we’re born for, that I’m born for, I think being able to portray the belief that, ‘Guys, this is all we got,’” Williams said. “This is all we need. We’re in a position where we’re not in a favorable position. We’re down. It’s all 11 of us on the field. And we got to go do a job.
“And so I think just the belief, the trust, the hard work that we put in, those are the moments that you wish for. Those are the moments that you dream about.”
