Eddie Vedder Performs ‘Powerful’ Cover of Classic Rock Song for The First Time

Eddie Vedder's annual Ohana Music Festival has become the place where the Pearl Jam frontman lives out his rock and roll fantasies. In the past, he has covered songs by goth icons like The Cure and pop superstars like Taylor Swift. And this year's edition was no different, as fans in Dana Point, California, witnessed firsthand on Sept. 26.

Vedder, 60, opened his headlining set with a cover of DEVO's "Gut Feeling," before performing Pearl Jam's "Corduroy" with his backing band, The Earthlings: Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers; producer/guitarist Andrew Watt; Glen Hansard of The Frames; and current AC/DC bassist Chris Chaney.

After performing a few of his solo songs, Vedder dipped into the covers, including a rendition of The Who's "I'm One" and "Watch Outside" by 90s garage rockers, The Mono Men. Towards the end of the set, Eddie surprised the crowd by performing Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same" for the first time.

A fan uploaded footage of the performance to YouTube, including Vedder's intro, where he recalled growing up in San Diego with an oppressive high school administrator who had it out for him.

At his lowest point, Eddie said he heard "this piece of music, and I'll never forget where I was, and how loud it was, and for some reason, this piece of music, it was like a drug. It lifted me up! It was a liftoff, and I realized, 'you know, [explicative] that guy. Someday, someday, he will mean nothing to you. You will figure this [explicative] out.'"

"I had the same experience as Eddie. Led Zeppelin saved my life," wrote one viewer in YouTube's comment section.

"This concert was THE BEST! Because Eddie's vision, heart, and voice were in it!" wrote another, while one fan said that Eddie playing both "The Song Remains the Same" and Pearl Jam's "Rearviewmirror" was absolutely "powerful stuff."

Led Zeppelin's 'The Song Remains The Same'

"The Song Remains the Same" comes from Led Zeppelin's fifth album, Houses of the Holy. The 1973 album is best known for producing radio staples "Over the Hills and Far Away," "Dancing Days," and the reggae pastiche, "D'yer Mak'er."

The song's title was also used for a 1976 concert rock film and corresponding live album. The film earned mixed reviews upon its release, including from guitarist Jimmy Page, who said it "is not a great film, but there's no point in making excuses," per Far Out.

However, in the five decades since its release, fans have warmed to The Song Remains The Same (thanks to a re-release with improved sound and a remastered live album).
