Justin Rose drops major hint over Ryder Cup 2027 captaincy after Luke Donald’s two-word response

Justin Rose admitted he would love to be Ryder Cup captain one day, but suggested he wants to still be playing in 2027.

At 45, Rose was the oldest member of the Team Europe playing squad but more than justified his selection as he collected two points in the 15-13 victory.

His partnership with Tommy Fleetwood in the fourballs was unbeatable as the Europeans claimed victory on US soil for the first time since 2012.

The pair won both of their matches with the duo recording 19 birdies across the 36 holes they played together to demolish whoever the US put against them.

Rose lost his singles match to Cameron Young, which started an incredible comeback from the hosts, but Europe held on.

Luke Donald has been a brilliant captain for the last two Ryder Cups, and there has been speculation over whether he will go for a third at Adare Manor in 2027.

Rose will be 47 by then, so naturally he has been tipped as the next in line should Donald not carry on.

When asked if he would carry on moments after the victory at Bethpage Black, Donald said: “We’ll see.”

Does Justin Rose want to be Ryder Cup captain?

    The short answer is yes.

He is already a certified Ryder Cup legend, with seven appearances and a fabulous record in the competition, he seems like the obvious choice to replace Donald.

“Luke has been absolutely phenomenal,” Rose told talkSPORT in New York. “He’s really given his heart and soul to this thing for four years now.

“He’s left a seriously strong blueprint and has actually made it very daunting for the next guy. The European legends of the game have always said, play, play, play, play as long as you can, because they’re the best days of your life.

“There’s time for vice captains, there’s time for captaincy. And when it’s the right time, if I’m ever asked, oh my God, yes please. But I love being in battle.

“It fires me up. It takes me to a place I didn’t know I could go. And I think after being a pro for 28 years, I’ve had to go places this week where I’ve never been before. It’s tested my resolve.

“I feel like I’ve never played in an environment like this before. So to feel like I’m learning as a player at 45 is incredible. And I think that I need to protect that as long as I can.”

Strangely, the only thing stopping him in 2027 could be his own form.

Former English golfer Chris Wood also believes that Rose would be in contention to captain Team Europe.

Speaking on Weekend Sports Breakfast, he said: “It’s hard to see at the moment because he’s playing so well – he might even be playing.

“He’ll be 47, but potentially Justin Rose would be somebody who could lead Europe unless we want another two years of Luke.”

    Rose’s controversy

On Saturday, Rose and Fleetwood were cruising against arguably the Americans’ biggest hitters.

Keegan Bradley selected their talisman Bryson DeChambeau and the world No.1 Scottie Scheffler to try and take down Rose and Fleetwood and win a much-needed point.

But with the contest slipping away on the 15th hole, DeChambeau’s caddie Gregory Bodine walked into Rose’s eyeline when he was about to take on a putt.

Rose instructed Bodine to get out of the way before he converted his effort.

DeChambeau then also nailed his putt before having a go at Fleetwood and Rose.

This sparked a heated conversation walking up to the 16th tee, with Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, Fleetwood’s caddie, Ian Finnis, and Francesco Molinari all getting involved.

The match didn’t last much longer as Rose won it on the 16th hole, and it was handshakes all-round.

And after the match, the Englishman discussed what happened.

He said: “It was a shame it got to that point as it was a great match.

“I was waiting to putt and the boys were working on their read and their calculations. I waited a few seconds and then they came up again.

“I said ‘it was my putt’ but maybe I could have said it more politely. By no means was there any disrespect meant. I said if you want me to say ‘excuse me please’ then my bad.

“I hope it is put to bed. It should be put to bed. There was no intent whatsoever. I admire Scottie more than anyone else on tour. It was something that was taken in a way that wasn’t intended.

“I am just trying to control my environment in that moment.”

Rose was also involved in another strange moment on Sunday with Bradley.

After a wayward shot that ended up near a television tower on hole 13, the officials had to make a decision on where he should play the ball from.

Just as he was about to take his shot, Bradley came running over, indicating the Englishman was taking his shot from the wrong place.

This seemed to inspire Rose, who came from three down to tie the hole heading into 18 only for Young to snatch the point at the death.

But despite having to deal with two bits of nonsense, Rose delivered a spectacular weekend display.
