Michael Fishman just had an acting audition—from a hotel room. In September 2025, the former Roseanne child star, who later appeared as an adult on the ABC spinoff The Conners, gave fans a look at the unique way he set himself up for an audition while he was traveling.
In a photo posted to Instagram, Fishman’s laptop was perched on his suitcase on the hotel room dresser. The actor then set up two lamps on both ends of the dresser to create extra lighting.
“When you're an Actor on the road with a sudden big audition, you learn to improvise and do your own lighting to make things work,” Fishman, 43, captioned the post.
He shared no details on the role he hopes to land, but Fishman hinted that his audition went well. “All I know is people think I'm fighting someone in my room,” he wrote. “I walked out into the hallway after and someone asked, ‘Is everyone okay in there?’ I'll take that a successful audition. The people in the hallway believed.”
Fans reacted in the comments section to wish Fishman the best of luck with the audition. While the actor did not reveal where his hotel room reading took place, the following day, he posted photos from a trip to Washington, DC.

Fishman was just six years old when he was first introduced to TV audiences as DJ Conner on the ABC sitcom Roseanne. He played the youngest Conner kid for nine seasons, from 1988 to 1997, then reprised the role for the 2018 spinoff The Conners.
In 2022, Fishman’s character was cut from The Conners. At the time, he told People magazine it was an “honor" to play the role for as long as he did. "While I was told I would not be returning for Season 5, Lanford was a valuable place to grow up, learn, and develop,” he said. “I was incredibly lucky to return home and demonstrate my expansion.”
He sent “tremendous love and success to everyone involved in production.”
Fans still hoped that Fishman would be brought back for The Conners finale in April 2025. When the character wasn’t even mentioned on the series finale, Fishman addressed disappointed viewers via an Instagram reel.
“People seem to want there to be some kind of conflict or controversy, especially on my part,” the actor said. “And the reality is, all I’ve ever had was empathy and understanding.”
“I have only gratitude,” he added of his experience on the ABC sitcom. “And I believe the legacy belongs to you in the audience.”
Fishman has logged one acting role since his exit from Roseanne—and it was a dramatic departure from his sitcom persona. In 2023, he starred in the Lifetime TV movie Abducted by My Teacher: The Elizabeth Thomas Story, where he played creepy character Tad Cummins.
Speaking with Remind magazine earlier this year, Fishman reflected on what went through his head when he auditioned for the role of the child kidnapper.
“I was like: One: do I want to do this job? Two: Am I willing? Three: That’s a really big departure from whom I’ve always been,” he said.
He added, “I’m looking for the right projects as an actor, and every actor has gone through this. You’re limited a little bit by your type and the opportunities of what’s around you. …On the television side, I’m looking for more episodes and more opportunities anywhere that I’m a little more wide open. So, pretty much any show that wants somebody, I’m a good choice.”
Fishman revealed that he was also pitching shows as a writer and a director.
