Arsenal loanee Fabio Vieira went from one extreme to another, as he injured himself in a challenge that saw him sent off.
The midfielder, who is on loan at Hamburg for the 2025/26 season, started for the German side in a 0-0 draw with Union Berlin on Sunday.
In the 98th minute of the clash, Vieira led with his studs in a challenge with Union defender Leopold Querfeld.
But Querfeld got to the ball first, as the Portuguese instead connected with his opponent’s shoulder.
Both players immediately went to ground in visible pain, with Querfeld clutching his head, and Vieira holding his knee.
Referee Deniz Aytekin wasted no time in dishing out a straight red card to Vieira while he was still on the ground.
Even after his dismissal, the 25-year-old remained on the pitch for several minutes as he received treatment.
Eventually, Vieira managed to limp off the pitch, not requiring a stretcher – potentially an encouraging sign for Hamburg and Arsenal.
While the German outfit wait to discover the extent of his injury, Vieira will have to sit out his team’s next match at the very least, with a red card carrying a minimum of a one match ban in the Bundesliga.
But the suspension could be even longer, with the German Football Association (DFB) deciding the duration on a case-by-case basis.
Despite this, Hamburg boss Merlin Polzin admitted he was not worried about the outcome, insisting Vieira had tried to pull out of his high challenge.
Speaking to DAZN after the match, the coach said: “In the end, the decision has been made. I certainly won’t revisit Mr. Aytekin’s decision.
GettyHe finally made it off the pitch minutes later, but only with the help of the Hamburg medical team[/caption]“I don’t see any head impact, and I also see Fabio pulling back. He also injures himself in the process.
“In the end, it’s a decisive one. I think you can clearly see that he’s pulling back, that he doesn’t hit the head, that he tried to go for the ball – but then, in the process, he also ensures that there’s no real momentum anymore.
“That’s why I trust our guidelines in German football – and don’t expect him to be suspended for long.”
Vieira’s red card was one of the few talking points in the goalless draw, which saw Hamburg earn a draw after Union striker Andrej Ilic saw his penalty saved in the 10th minute.
The result leaves Hamburg 13th in the Bundesliga table, with this their second draw in their opening five league matches.
Aside from that, the Red Shorts have one once, and lost twice so far, while Vieira has featured in all three of their games since joining on loan with an option to buy from Arsenal on September 1.

Following that, he played 79 minutes of Hamburg’s 2-1 victory over Heidenheim, claiming an assist in the clash.
Vieira will certainly be hoping the injury he sustained against Union Berlin is not a serious one, having joined his current club in a bid to earn regular playing time.
He never quite managed to get going after joining Arsenal from Porto in a deal worth around £34million.
In three years at the Emirates, Vieira made 49 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals, with the majority of his game time coming off the bench.
The Portugal youth international spent last season on loan at former club Porto, where he scored five goals in 42 games overall.
