Florida State kicked off its 2025-26 season with an invitational on home turf, resulting in a win for both the men and women Seminoles. The host team won 32 of a possible 44 events, giving both genders a 1-0 start to the season. The stars of the weekend were largely sophomores, many who racked up multiple wins.

One such sophomore was Logan Robinson, who clocked a new best of 49.60 in the 100 IM to win the event. Robinson added on two more victories in the 200 fly (1:43.83) and 100 fly (46.70). An NCAA B-finalist in the 200 fly, Robinson opens up this season over three seconds faster in this event than he did the 2024 season (1:47.07).

Robinson’s fellow class of 2028 teammates, Maryn McDade and Michel Arkhangelsky picked up another three individual wins each. Mcdade put up a dominant women’s 50 fly performance, touching in 23.98, a half a second ahead of the rest of the field. She also won both sprint freestyle events (22.72/50.03) and contributed to the Seminoles’ victorious 200 free (1:31.68) and medley (1:38.22) relays.

Arkhangelsky won the same trio of events that McDade did on the women’s side. The France native hit 19.54/42.75 in the spring freestyles and stopped the 50 fly clock in 20.77. Arkhangelsky was also the lone 18-second splitter in the 200 free relay field and the only butterflier sub-20 in the medley relay.

European Juniors finalist Martina Fanunza started her first ever SCY season on the right foot. The FSU freshman went three for three in the women’s breaststroke events, clocking 28.78/1:02.99/2:17.24, respectively.

In addition to these impressive individual performers, Florida State also swept the relay and diving events.

Other teams got the best of the home team in several backstroke events. Purdue sophomore Blake Rowe won the 100 and 200 back, punching a lifetime best of 47.47 in the former. His previous best stood at 48.02 from the 2025 B1G Championships. Rowe also finished 2nd in a Purdue 1-2 punch in the 200 IM. Rowe went 1:48.77, while winner Evan Mackesy turned in 1:47.63. This marked a best time by a second and a half for Mackesy, who is also a sophomore.

For women’s second-place Rice, a pair of Ava’s led the charge. Sophomore Ava Portello dominated the mid-distance free races, turning in 1:48.01 and 4:50.08 in the 200/500 free. Ava Hamblett, a senior, touched first in the 200 back with a 1:58.39.

The Mountaineers left the weekend with one event winner in MJ Gilligan, who scored a 4:22.05 new PR in the 400 IM.

Up next for the host team is a trip to Atlanta, where they will compete in Georgia Tech’s Dual Meet Tournament October 17-18. The Rice Owls will host a number of teams in their Houston pool for the Dual-A-Palooza October 10. Next week, the WV State Games will come to Morgantown, hosted by West Virginia University. For the Indiana-based Purdue, their next stop on the schedule is the World Cup, which has a stop in-state on October 11. Finally, for Tampa, next on the agenda is a dual against Florida Southern on October 17.
